Large Scale Central

Modern bulkhead flat build

I’m guessing that 3 to 5 of those beams would max out the car load but I haven’t done the math…

For beams like that, I just wimp out and buy them from Evergreen.

Load Limit 205000

hahahaha

hahahaha

I.ve been workin on the load and built a bunch of plastic beams . I think this is the load configuration i’m gonna use. The sleepers are made with 1/8" basswood strips cut the width of the deck . There are 6 under the first layer of steel and these will be made to fit into the side stake pockets and the load glued to those. I am using 4 beams a scale 20"x20"running almost the length of the car for the first level. On top of those will be two more levels of steel 20"x12" somewhat shorter than the first layer. Here’s a few pic’s of the load before painting .(http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/imga0867.jpg)(http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/imga0868.jpg)(http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/imga0869.jpg)

I like this car! Good job.

Mike, Fantastic car… Looks great, even the load… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

really amazing work.

thanks for sharing

I wish I could do this

Thanks guys ! I painted the beams with Krylon grey today. Took a photo of it as it is now. Gonna weather the beams a little and then get started on the sleepers next. I just love it when it gets to this stage where you can see the finish line. (http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/imga0871.jpg)

Mike,

Wow the car looks great, thanks for sharing your project

Colin

Now build 20 more, and you have something!(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Ten times better than all the production stuff you see, color and detail and everything. A little rust on the beams like the pictures show and I don’t see how it could get any better than this, Mike. I don’t know, maybe rust the couplers?

I could never do what you’ve done. Thanks for keeping us posted.

Since the weather around here has finally gotten nice I’ve been working outside getting my railroad back up and running . Lots of trees to prune and tracks to level. I did have some time to work on this car however and got a little more done on the load. I built 6 of these load sleepers. They are made from 1/8" basswood mounted with epoxy to a plastic channel and stem piece that fits in the side stakes of the car. A brass pin is inserted through the wood and plastic pieces and also epoxied together to form a nice strong part. The steel beams will be glued to these next.(http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/imga0875.jpg) (http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/imga0876.jpg)(http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/imga0877.jpg)

Here’s a few pictures of the removable load I made for this car . The beams that I made were weathered with chalks diluted in alcohol and epoxied to the wood sleepers. The strapping is made from K&S #815020 flat bars and painted black and topped off with a little sliver of .010 plastic painted orange to simulate the strap clips. The load lifts off and on real easy now after some tweaking . Now I have to clear coat the car and get the decals. By the way the decals for the centerbeam car will be here this week and i’ll finally have that car done .(http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/imga0881.jpg)(http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/imga0884.jpg)(http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/imga0885.jpg)

Hell of a finish to an excellent build(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

HAH!

Mike, great work however it’s not up to your standards. I can only suggest you send me that car and start on a new one that is actually up to your standards!

Just fantastic Mike, now beat it up and flatten a wheel or two and call it done! Still think it needs some plastic hangin off it …every time I see them flats (1:1 running 60mph) they always seem to have plastic flapping on them somewhere.

Outstanding!

That car would look funny on the end of a Amtrack consist Dave.

Not really Mike …thinking 1:1 prototypical and I bet it has happened!

Great work!
