Large Scale Central

Modern bulkhead flat build

Thanks Dan and Bob , Devon , Rooster has first dibs on the centerbeam .

Mike

I’m thinking you are gonna beat it up a bit when finished. Don’t forget to model some plastic and strapping wedged into the bulkheads and cracks so it can catch the breeze and make them flapping noises.

Looking great!!

Dave , its gonna get a little beat up when its done for sure. Thinking of breaking a few of the wood bulkhead pieces so the steel is showing , we’ll see. I got the bulkhead ends done after adding wire grab irons and cleaning it up with some files and 600 grit wet and dry sandpaper. I’ll leave the brake wheel , chain and other stuff off till later. Now i’m gonna do the steel deck using this Evergreen #4250 v-groove siding. I cut the sheet 11’ wide and then measured for the hold down slots and cut them out. Going by the pictures it looks like it goes 2 full length boards , then a slot , then two full again . I measured in from the side 18" and drew a line and then cut the slots out with a x-acto blade. I earlier drew a centerline on the car and lined up the first sheet with the first slot centered on the centerline. I’ll work tward both ends from the center. Here’s some more pictures.(http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/IMGA0788.JPG)(http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/IMGA0791.JPG) (http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/IMGA0792.JPG)

Mike, don’t pay him any mind, he only builds to the 10’ view rule like you’re doing. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

With this fence, do you plan on running Amtrak and having them lined up for moon day ?

Ok , what am I not getting here. Moon Day , Donald Duck … sorry I must be getting old. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Mike,

Ray Dunkin is going to get jealous. I told him I have a small modelers crush on him because he does such damn fine work. But I think your starting to compete for that spot. I wouldn’t guess in a million years that this was made from just styrene. You really do set the bar high. Its an inspiration, really.

Geez, Mike, I was looking for something…anything…that could be improved, but I don’t see how it could be any better. Maybe somebody can come up with something technical that ain’t prototypical, but it looks so good it wouldn’t matter.

Moon Day would be,

Today, there is nobody volunteering to buy free drinks, but on the second Saturday of July every year, thousands of people gather along the chain link fence that runs adjacent to the Amtrak train tracks outside of Mugs Away Saloon in Orange County, California, to show their butts to passersby. Reportedly, trains passing the “moon show” slow down between Irvine and San Juan Capistrano stations.

Planned a year in advance with an official website, the event draws people from all over the country and has turned into a festival of sorts. Throughout the day, bands perform in Mugs and groups pack picnics.

Thanks Devon and John for the complements , and now I know what “moon day” is . I never would have guessed that as a event. Only in California . That would be funny to have a crowd of 1/29 people mooning at the station .

Yea, and if you did that you would get good at painting…faces :-0

I’m not gonna do it , I have to keep my railroad grandchild friendly.

Full moon a’risen

OH wow

Look, but don’t touch! (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

I remember the good ol’ days and Mugs. My Pool team would play there in the 80s.

The area was growing too fast and with a few to lube the thinking, what a great Anti-Establishment display to show your free spirit!(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Times were different and conservatives and liberals could be friends…

Where was I , oh yeah sorry I got distracted , I was building this flatcar. So I got the v-groove siding all glued on and then I turned my attention to the sides . Using Evergreen #253 for the side stake pockets I cut them 1/4" long and glued them to the sides as per photo’s. Then between them from underneath I glued a piece of .030 plastic. Also on the sides are these little triangular brackets. On top of the deck Evergreen #144 pieces are fitted and glued on. Oh I forgot to mention I drill a small hole in the side stake’s as pre photo’s again. Got half the car sides done to this point . After I finish the other side i’m heading to Hobby Lobby and see what kind of pins and such I can use for the deck load anchors.(http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/IMGA0798.JPG) (http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/IMGA0797.JPG)

Mike,

I think the best part of your builds is the materials list. It nice to not only see exactly what your doing and with what.
