I got a little more done , off and on over the last few days . I’ve been working on how I could make the deck anchors . There are 66 of them and I was hoping to see something at the local craft stores that resembled the real thing as close as possible. After some searching I came up empty , nothing looked “right” to me. So going back to my stash of Evergreen plastic pieces I did a little experimenting and came up with this . I took some Evergreen #244 half round and cut it into a little 3"piece . Then I put it on my finger tip and filed it down so it wasn’t higher than the deck. After I glued it with MEK and it dried I drilled a small hole part way into it for some extra detail . After these are done i’ll have to come up with the other anchor type , a triangular kinda thingy . Here’s a couple of pictures .(http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/IMGA0801.JPG)(http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/IMGA0803.JPG)
Very nice!
Mike that’s coming along nicely
Thanks Sean and Bob for the comments. Hows yours coming Bob , any pictures?
I figured out how I was going to do the triangular deck anchors for my car. I glued a piece of Evergreen #292 angle stock to a piece of #118 flat to give me a triangular tube. After trimming it all up I simply slice off a piece and glue it on. After its dry I go back and trim it with a small file so its even with the deck. Got one side done today .(http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/IMGA0806.JPG) (http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/IMGA0807.JPG)
My lord this is wild. I’m just amazed.
Its been a few days since i.ve posted any progress on this car , but I haven’t been idle. I finally finished the deck of the car . After it was done I counted 262 pieces not including the Evergreen V groove siding. No wonder it seemed to be taking so long. Ok so after the deck was done I put on the 4 vertical outside braces on the bulkhead . There are 4 of them made from Evergreen #148 12’6" long with Archer rivet decals first applied. I also made the little wooden box for the side of the car . I think its for tacking paperwork to. Its made of real wood sanded real thin and framed with Evergreen HO scale 2x4’s . I also made the pulling rings out of .030 plastic . That’s the thing with the hole in it. I then started on the jacking pads. I made one so far with 3 to go but not anymore tonite. I’ll take a picture of the parts for it on the next one I do.(http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/IMGA0808.JPG)(http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/IMGA0809.JPG)(http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/IMGA0812.JPG)(http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/IMGA0810.JPG)
Damn I hate opening this thread up to see the progress you’ve made Mike. I just know I’m going to get sucked in to a half hour or more of ‘how the hell did he do that’. Amazing work, simply amazing.
Amazing!!!
Thanks guys
And that is why I cant have nice things. I wont work that hard to have them.
Just freaking beautiful work there.
Mike
It looks good but not up to your standards! I run stuff here on the 10’ rule so you can send it to me and start another build since you have the log down and know how to fix the errors.
Very nice!
Edit: because I wanted to tell you to put Mr. Marconi on ignore, Greg E can instruct you on how to do so.
Here’s some photos of the jack pads. the long bottom piece and triangular sides are made from Evergreen #148 solid strips. The bottom piece is 1’ long and the triangular sides are 9" tall . After the MEK sets I trim them down to 6" so there is a small flat spot at the top. Once they are glued to the car side I glue on a piece of .015 sheet for the cover and then after it sets I trim it up with small files. I hope the photo’s show what i’m talking about . Anyhow today I ordered the brake equipment for a USA stack car from Charlie Roe and believe it or not I called Stan C for the decals for my centerbeam car finally. I will get the decals for this one too but for now I have enough to keep me out of trouble for a while. Dave , all transfers of rolling stock have to go through the CEO . Good luck with that .(http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/IMGA0816.JPG)(http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/IMGA0814.JPG)(http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/IMGA0815.JPG)
Mike
Interesting build.
Why didn’t you just shape a solid piece for the jack pad?
Love this car!
Sean , I could have made it in one piece but I don’t have any plastic that is big enough . I didn’t think laminating some plastic would give me the uniformity that I was after.
This is just mind blowing. I could follow the steps in this thread, but there is no way on god’s green earth I could follow them and have mine look anything like that! Sure you can Matt , your railroad kinda looks like mine .(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-smile.gif)
Matt, it just takes a little practice. Some foul words. Some practice. A few band-aids. More practice. Some stuff tossed into the scrap pile. Even more practice. A few days trying to uncross your eyes. And a little practice.
You forgot the part about gluing your fingers together.
