Large Scale Central

Modern bulkhead flat build

Nice work there Mike. Nice to watch builders at work(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

More excellent work… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Mike, if you don’t get your engine battery powered before you want to come, please come anyway… I have a couple of engines already battery powered…

Thanks Andy

I started working on the bulkhead part of this car . There are many different types of bulkheads that are used on the TTPX car. The steel bracing vary from when the car was built and the inside part can be steel sheet or wood. The sides are made of .060 plastic 11’ tall and 3’ at the base and 1’ at the top. The 2 inside pieces are made from .030 sheet and cut the same as the outside except the lift slot is omitted. They are glued on with a slight outward angle. These pieces are glued to a piece of .015 plastic 10’ x 3’ for a base and a piece of .060 1’ x 10’ at the top. The long triangular part and small triangular braces at the top are made of .015 sheet. The 4 vertical braces are from Evergreen # 277 and the mid horizontal brace is Evergreen # 253. This whole assembly will be glued to the cars ends , minus the wood when finished. The wood will go on much later after painting and weathering. Still working on the first one with more to do to it. There are some vertical pieces with bolts that hold on the wood pieces on the real car and I experimented with JB Weld but wasn’t happy with the look so i’ll use Archer rivet decals for those. Once the first one is done the other should be easier cuz i’ll know what sizes of material to use.(http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/IMGA0769.JPG)(http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/IMGA0770.JPG)

coming along!

You sure do build some amazing cars!! That would be awesome if you can make it to Andy’s!

Got a little more done on my flatcar . I built the other bulkhead and now I have it as far as I can till my Archer rivet decals get here. Then i’ll be able to mount them to the flatcar deck and continue . Mike, I for one really like seeing this type of post. You have the scale sizes so any scale can build along. I also try to tell what the scale size is for the forms and flat as opposed to .030 etc. Great build here. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

The Archer rivet decals came in so I was able to go forward with my car. I’m trying to get as much done on the bulkheads as I can before I mount them to the deck. Its a lot easier to do it that way. I put the decals on 4 strips of Evergreen #127 and using MEK and a tiny brush mounted them to the both bulkheads as per photos. There are 2 more that will be installed when the bulkheads are mounted but they have to wait for now. The lifting slots in the bulkhead sides are reinforced with a horseshoe looking piece made of Evergreen .010 plastic . Another piece of .015 plastic is cut to fit and mounted to the center angled brace as per photo’s. After it dried I cleaned it up with a small file. Shifting my attention to the brake end next. Using .030 plastic , I cut 3 pieces that the brake wheel will attach to. The left piece is mounted to the Evergreen #277 vertical upright after I notched it so it sits flat. The 2 other pieces are cut and fit and glued together to form the brake stand. It takes a little “tweaking” to make it look right . More rivets are added to finish this part. I hope you can understand better what I’m doing by these pictures. Today i’ll mount the bulkheads to the car and clean up the ends so its ready for the next step.(http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/IMGA0774.JPG)(http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/IMGA0775.JPG)

Ok , got the bulkhead ends glued on with MEK last night . Then using files and sandpaper blocks got the ends all equal and strait. I used Squadron Green body filler to fill any gaps and let it dry overnight . This morning I sanded the body putty smooth . Looking at the pictures I re-created these panels that appear to be welded to the ends. They are made from .010 sheet. The little oval holes are made with a small drill bit in a pin vice. These are noticeable to me on the real thing so I wanted it for this car. They are then glued on with MEK.(http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/IMGA0776.JPG)(http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/IMGA0777.JPG) (http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/todus2/gondola%20load/IMGA0778.JPG)

The details you include in your models are amazing, Mike.

Dan called it…it’s pretty sick stuff and I always enjoy his builds!

Thanks guys . its fun working with this stuff (plastic). I liked erector sets too . Now I’m showing my age.

What, no Lincoln logs???

Looking good on the build…

I still have my erector set, packed away in the back of a closet.

Mine is a fond memory . I liked the tower crane . I had the logs too.

I got a little more done today on the car. Those panels I did needed to get a lot thinner , even the .010 didn’t look fight to me . So using my favorite file I thinned it way down . After that was done on all four corners it was time to get on with the real fun stuff , the ladders . I use this jig that I made years ago and use it for all my ladders. The material I use is Evergreen #164 for the verticals and # 211 for the steps. I cut the steps oversize and trim it on my Delta sander. The forth step goes from one side across to the other and it threaded through a small eyelet. A piece of Evergreen # 286 “H” channel is filed into a “C” channel and the eyelet is epoxied to the center of it. That is then glued to the big center vertical braces. A piece of Evergreen# 124 is used as a mid ladder brace .I’ll get back to it tomorrow . I hope I described it okay , theres a lot of little stuff still to do . Anyway , here’s a few pictures. Great looking ladders, Mike. This will be a fine model when you’re done.

Very nice as usual. When your done you can send it over with the center beam car !!!

Mike that model is going to be a masterpiece.

With your instructions I have started to try and make one. If it turns out half as good as yours I’ll be pleased.

Excellent work
