MIK's Challenge Tortoise & Lizard Bash Build Log

If we start a build log and provide a napkin sketch, can we still get in? Would be in 1:24 scale.

We propose to take the California Experience to the rails so people all across the country can experience the life style. A steaming hot tub, beach sand, and picnic tables and a bevy of bathers will provide the entertainment.

Sounds good. Don’t forget the palm tree! LOL

Hot Tub??? isn’t that a waste of water???

Just kidding love the concept

Already been sourced.

Clothing optional sign hanging from the edge of the tub?

Will it also be a time machine???

:stuck_out_tongue:

Cool!

“California dreaming on a winter’s day” has become reality.

Doc Tom

We’ve been working out the design. To be effective, the hot tub is going to need a pump and heater. I’m thinking 1 horse power should do the trick.

I’m envisioning a horse walking within an open wheel, sitting on rollers that then turn and provide power for the pump. A worker could hold a carrot or apple in front of the horse to “entice” it. The water could then be passed through a boiler similar in design to a steam donkey before returning to the hot tub.

One roller could have an eccentric and a surf board could be mounted such that the rider bobs up and down with the eccentric so those without an ocean can get more of the California flavor.

Finally, I’m thinking maybe a high dive over the hot tub.

Lots and lots of rain in So Cal lately, so the council gave the go ahead.

Todd why do all the pumbing and horse on the tread mill when all you need is a fire under the tub and a big can of beans, empty…

If you also want it to be a hot tub time machine I could loan you the flux capcitor from the caboose drag racer that is if I can find where it is, I mean when it is.

Happy RRing

We had thought of that, but decided that a fire under the tub would be too hard to control the temperature. We Californian’s are a finicky bunch about our hot tub temps.

Also, a pump can produce more powerful jets and bubbles, and we Californian’s just love the feel of bubbles up our assets and want the rest of the country to experience this sensation. It’s kind of like when people blow smoke up your asset, but more intoxicating.

Besides, the eccentric will provide a surfer’s experience and who knows what else I may come up with.

Finally, the “horse in the hamster wheel wheel” will be a novel approach, and we know know many horsepower we are getting out of it. But Donkey has been asking me about filling in on occasion.

Got some work done and picked up the palm trees today.

This is how we envision the system will be powered. The horse walking within the wheel will rotate the wheel causing the supporting shafts to turn running the pump and … Probably, the horse will just stand around, while the wheel rotates under his feet. Pipe was ground down from an old unused 4" PVC drain pipe coupler.

An old electronics surplus grab bag Mabuchi motor will serve as the pump. A plastic railcar wheel was ground down and a piece of Plastruct tube takes up the excess shaft space. I may or may not grove the wheel/pulley.

Finally, you can’t have the California Experience without palm trees. These are from Woodland Scenics sourced though Michael’s Craft Store.

Todd, are we making parts already?

From the rules, it was assumed that “cutting and building” related to the actual rail cars that are to be mailed out. Our shops started sourcing materials and getting things together to make sure that our ideas are viable and can be executed prior to the actual build.

If grinding the PVC ring/wheel circumvented the rules, I’ll make another in a couple days. (Actually, the wheel had already been ground down years ago when I put in my RigiDuo, and I just slipped it on the shaft so I’ll just pull it off and put it back on.)

Can I start drinking the Pepsi so I can use the bottle in a couple days?

Todd, I was just kidding around. I know you have a pile of “stuff” like I do, so sourcing a part from the pile is not a violation of the rules.

I’ve made visualizing marks on donors, but surgery is 48 hours away… heck I only found a back pocket napkin this morning, fortunately it hadn’t been repurposed to a hankie yet…

John

I have decided Dave T is a sadistic evil person. We are all trying to figure out just how much planning can be done without actually being considered building. you know he is laughing maniacally at our suffering

The back shop has been brain storming some ideas, and we think we may have a cloud burst. The designers have come up with a method that will let “the horse in the hamster wheel” actually tow/push the railcar around the country. Possibly, space permitting, the assembly can then be hoisted onto the rail car and the horse wheel wheel will power a couple dynamos that will run the hot tub, etc. Otherwise, the assembly will just be jacked above the rails so that the wheels can spin freely.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything quite like this. Should be novel if we can pull it off.
