The MIK - Annual Build Challenge

I have volunteered to donate one of my RUSTIC REDWOOD buildings for a prize for

MIKs Challenge contest, I have thought about it, and have decided to make a track side

structure. This structure is going to be named Miks Freight Transfer Station

I have chosen to make a Redwood Kit structure with a wooden platform and a

covered area on the side.

I designed this structure from a Redwood Shack, that I changed with a Man door and

a Freight door on the side, and added the wooden platform, and a sign.

I thought it would be appropiate to include this in the building process building forum,

this prize will be given to the favorite first year partisipator.

Close up of the rafters that are locked together, locked into the ridge board and the eaves have square holes and the rafters have tennons that set in the mortises, being glued and nailed produces very strong joints.

The parts are designed

to interlock together, and overlap. I use Titebond 3 glue and 23 gauge headless pins.

I use Grex pinner, the pins are designed with a glue that when shot into wood the friction

heats up the glue and helps hold pieces together after setting a few minutes.

I have pulled the pins after incerting and they pull fairly easy, after setting a few minutes

it is noticable difference the holding power.

The 3/8" length is the length mostly used, almost all the pieces are 1/4" thick, so 3/8" is

the best. I use a small brush to apply the glue, and into the smaller areas the brush works

very good. With interlocking joints and lap joints really makes this structure very strong.

This structure is designed to be kept outside.

That is a very nice post and beam constructed building. It would be a shame for the recipient to cover it up with walls.

Dennis,

You and I have both ponied up for the first timers award. How do we propose to award our rewards? Dave T suggestions? I have started a rookie list. My thought was to award my award to the best overall presentation by a rookie to include the build as well as over all idea and its presentation and photographing. Are we offering these two prizes as a first and second prize or are you (Dennis) going to be the judge for your prize based on your criteria ( I hope so cuz I want a shot at that building). If we do ofer them as a first and second then I think we should partner as judges. And since your building are so down right cool we could make it the first prize and mine the second.

Ideas? Dave? Anyone else? I have to add that mine is not first build but rather new to the MIK challenge. We have some first and second timers.

You are right, yours and my awards are a little confusing. Sorry if I sound like
a person that does not care, but the people that makes the decisions for this contest
will make the decision. I run my business all day, and make a enough decisions, I am making no
demands or suggestions on who gets the prize I am donating.

Devon in the past at the conclusion of the challenge Dave T has put a photo of everyones finished product on a seperate thread and everyone who entered has a chance to vote for the prize catagories.

Well I like that idea a lot better than me judging anything. I have been trying to get everyone else to vote for the winner. I don’t want the pressure.

Single outside frame with the box joint corner these joints make it very strong corners

Freight door has double frame, both have the box joints in the corners, The inside frame is narrower just by enough of the thickness of the door, that way the door is glued on the edges and edge of the inside frame

The door is made from 3 layers of 1/32" acrylic, back layer has the scribes for the siding behind the X, and the clear window frame holder.

The center piece is the x’s and the window panes.

The outside piece is just a frame that goes around the window openings with a .040 offset
