And the winner of this year’s 2018 Challenge is…Richard Lee Hope Tunisia Sung III. Congratulations on a job well done. “It used to be round!”

Hmmmm …So we have Eric the Wood miser and Ray the great plastic trickster…

I wonder what he will come up with …Hmmmmmm

I will have to go through my 2x4s today and pick a candidate.

Next will come a decision about what I am building! This project is coming at the right time since the Dirty and Dusty is currently moving indoors!

I will post a small tutorial in a few days of what I do to cut small strip wood safely on a table saw.

Dave, here is a link to an article I put together from another web site on using both a table saw and band saw.

http://www.gscalejunkie.com/Articles/MillingScaleLumberRev-01.pdf

Thanks for posting this. I saved it for reference. (https://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Thats a great article Bob. I use just about everyone of those techniques. I love my fingers and want to keep them.

Thanks for the Band Saw tip with the adjustable square. Neato! (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)I don’t know how many times I’ve adjusted the tension trying to straighten the cut. Makes much more sense to adjust the feed.

Band saws have an inherent bias to wander. Once my fence was set to counter that bias, I have never had to alter it, even using different size blades.

John,

What bearing is bad on your table saw? I rescued my grandfather’s old Grizzly saw by tearing it down the nothing. Found 2 ball bearings that where bad. Took them down to my local hardware store and they had a drawer full of bearings. Found what I needed and reassembled.

Hmmm…Scrap wood, yes. Idea, after beer. Me thinks my Dremel, however, may have issues of adequacy. Never used a table saw, and I don’t own one, so I appreciate the rule addendum permitting the use of someone else’s skills. I guess I can compost my palm fronds, now…

It’s a It was a direct drive and the bad bearing is in the motor. A new fangled never go wrong sealed bearing.

Thanks for the thought.

John,

A new motor is $200? Now I’m really glad mine is a belt drive.

OFFICAL RULING #2

Rule #1 applies here!

BTW: guys, I’m beginning to think that you guys set up late in the chat room, plotting how to make this harder on 'ol Dave. And to think that I thought that this year it would be easier…

@Chris K & et al: Yes you can use your pre-cut strip wood… But I will have to give you a two day penalty. You have to start actual construction 2 days latter then everyone else. Wait till they have a chance to cut also. And a penalty of 1/4 inch x 3/8 inch on the finished size of your bundle ( 1 1/4 tall x 3 1/8 wide) to allow for kerf.

@ Eric M. Palm Fronds? Give us a break… Next you will be complaining of the warm tropical breezes, and gentle waves lapping you toes as the grass skirted maidens bring you a cool beverage within a locale grown pineapple. BTW extra points for the palm fronds, and double if you have a R****otary Plow on you pike.

@Boomer You in or out this year?

The manufacturer didn’t have spares, found one at Suckers Anonymous, I guess

Hats off to Dave for coming up with a great idea for this years Fun build challenge.

I really like the concept of us all starting from the same raw material and I’m sure we will all be amazed once again by the imagination and skill of the participants.

Good luck and Happy building to everyone.

Thanks Dave,

It’ll take me days to remove all the extra pins I fired into the old wood! Y’know if 3 are all that’s needed then a dozen more can’t hurt!

While the real modelers are making lumber, I’ll be grooming mine. I’ll measure my thin cut blade and be fair assembling my 2x4 (finish). Not to exceed whatever that was …

Thanks to Bob C, I’ll be able to slice some boards on my Bojangles band saw … sings and dances a bit. (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)Hmmm where’s my resaw blade?

A teaser; A section house modified for a rail truck with an 11’ boom on the back. et al

I’m still undecided. I have two completely utterly different ideas, both are true to Mik. Only one is close to Dave’s outline, but I would literally be finished with it in a week and it would probably make the judges eyes bleed; the other is a scratch build on a completely different tack but also completely askew from this years challenge. I’ll likely do idea #1, just because, but I won’t expect any prizes for craftsmanship.

Thanks Dave, that will allow me to participate better as I currently don’t have a saw to cut the 2x4 into strip wood. The penalty for using precut makes sense to me.

Thanks Again,

Chris

Kick in the okole (butt) received…I will brave the frigid 73 degree night air, walk the dog, and ponder my options. I have a professional obligation that may clobber me, but…
