MIK’s Build Challenge 2018
Let the fun begin.
All aspects governing the Challenge are to be applied under Mik’s build challenge Rule #1

Rule #1: Remember this is a “Fun Build Amongst Friends”

The 2018 challenge is a tribute to LSC’s own Alan Bupp. A throw back to the starting days of the challenge. A time to overcome the doldrums of January and a long winter to wait thru till we can get back to running trains.

The 2018 challenge shall be:
Build what ever you would like! The hard part of the Challenge shall be: Your build must be built from a single length of common construction 2x4!

You will have 30 build days, and a Max budget of $30.00

TO KEEP THE PLAYING FIELD EQUAL (and here is 1/2 the challenge): Each participant can use only so much of the 2x4! With the different scales we all use each inch of 2x4 equals different scale board feet! The larger scales need more wood to equal the same amount as the smaller scales. As an example a 2x4 ( really 1.5” x 3.5” ) scales out to be 31” x 72” in 1:20.3 scale, and a whooping 48” x 112” in 1:32.

Doing WAY to much math I settled on this:
1:18 60”
1:20.3 53”
1:22.5 48”
1:24 42”
1:29 38”
1:32 36”
Using a complex algorithm to compensate for the saw kerf (that remains the same in all sizes) this should yield about 19,890 Scale Board Feet of lumber, after average cutting using a 1/8” thin kerf blade.

The Final Build can be any size or shape that you want, of anything that you would like to build. You should try to use as much of the 2x4 as you can, before using more wood. If you do use more wood then the assigned 2x4, you need to declare how much you used after using up all the 2x4. But no penalty for not using it all. You may use extra material as a base as you see fit, without any penalty, other then against the $30.00 total.

TIME LINE:

Jan 1 thru 12, Sign up. You can start planning, drawing (napkins not included), gathering your 2x4, but No cutting or building.

Before Jan 13th, Build Logs to be posted in Annual Build Challenge forum on LSC. Please post your Napkins drawings with your first posting.

Jan 13th, 0001hr, Actual construction begins.

Jan 14th thru Feb 12th, up-dates to your build log posted.

Feb 13th, building ends (extended to local sunrise on the 14th if you must put in an all nighter to finish).

Feb 13th thru 17th, Posting pictures to the “Official Finished “ forum post [ I will start ] for judging. Also post your total “out of pocket” cost.

Feb 19th thru 25th, Voting on the “Official Vote “ forum post [ I will start ] for judging. Also Again this year, you may vote by e-mailing me your vote if you would like to keep it secret.

RESTRICTIONS: Actual building starts on JAN 13th and Ends on Feb 11th. That gives you 5 weekends to get it done.
$30 (US$ or your local equal.) is the max you can spend on materials, paints, glue etc. If you buy a bottle of ink and use two drops, don’t worry about it, if you use the whole bottle , count it. If you have to use 2 inches of a 36 inch piece of brass, because thats the shortest length they sell, figure the cost as 1/18th, you get the picture!

Any item that you already have in your hands as of 1 Jan 2018, does not count towards the limit. Any “Free” item you can procure, is free. This is on the honor system guys. Refer to rule #1
All contestants MUST post a “Build Log” in the Annual Build Challenge forum section of LSC. You have to declare your intentions of what you will attempt to build in the initial post. Post your napkin (drawings) with your first post. You can change it if you want to, but you must post it. NO phantom builds to pop up on the last day! Progress posts ( preferably with pics ) need to be made often. Recommended Build Challenge forum Title “Daves 2018 challenge log”. Something along those lines so every one will know, and be able to follow along.
Yes you can use more wood for your construction if needed, BUT you must use up most of the 2x4 first.

Happy New Year! & Great Building!!

I’m in. A 53 inch flat car is gonna take some mighty large curves

A 53" 2x4…hmmmm. I’m in for sure.

Chris

Good idea!

Different geographic areas stock different wood for 2x4s quality may vary. Maine stocks spruce, in Connecticut, i got douglas fir. I assume we can pick and choose our stick and select the best X-inches of it. Now, can we choose a pressure treated or cedar stick vs standard construction grade? Can we use off cuts or scrap from larger sticks? ( 2x10s or 2x12s tend to have bigger sections of clear knot free wood)

I have some ideas that would benefit from being pressure treated. I have some used and scrap bits which would work. I also have scraps of spruce two bys which are long and skinny or short and wide but not 2x4 sized, i frequently use these for projects.

The question is can we choose any old bit of wood that is within the proscribed volume or do we need to get a proper store gotten 2x4?

By the way, I would be happy to mill some wood for folk who want to play but cannot saw their own

I’m in. Already have some 2x4’s here to choose from. …

42 inches of 2x4! That would make a real big pile of scale lumber. So what I build has to be a wooden…

Since I prefer to use cedar for my outside builds, and since my scrap cedar is 1x6, and my scrap 2x4s are pine/spruce/fir, could I use the equivalent board feet of 1x6, or do I have to use a 2x4?

I’m in. Already have the 2x4 and the idea. Now I just gotta find me a napkin …

I’m in. This is a great idea and happen to have come across a piece of 2x4 while cleaning the shop that will be dang close to 42"

OFFICAL ruling!

Remember RULE #1 comes first!!!

OK Guys, I really don’t care… BUT to keep it as fair as possible.

NOTE: the size we’re working with is 1.5" x 3.5", NOT a true 2"x4".

Yes you can cut your “2x4” from larger size stock, it is a good way to get the “best piece” to start with.

Yes you can use 2 - 2x2s instead of one 2x4, BUT the length CAN NOT exceed the prescribed length of your scale.

Yes you can use 2 - 1x4s instead of one 2x4, BUT the length CAN NOT exceed the prescribed length of your scale.

Yes you can have someone else (neighbor/friend) cut up your 2x4 for you.

I will post a small tutorial in a few days of what I do to cut small strip wood safely on a table saw.

Oh goody. I have lots of nice Cedar in painted 5x5’s in my wood pile. After cutting off the painted edges I should have no problem coming up with a 53" piece 1.5" x 3.5" from which to mill my lumber. I have had parts and pieces kicking around for a long time to build up EBT’s tank-on-flat. I built a flat car years ago but after it was done decided I should not have planked it; so it stayed as just a flat and the tank went in to storage. I still have all the plans (somewhere) and most all the detail parts in stock. I might possibly be able to come up with a finished tank-on-flat for $0 new investment.

And here I was thinking I would sit this one out.

I’ve never done a challenge but it sounds like fun. I’ll probably try to build a smallish cliffhanger-worker-shack. AFAIK I have just the right redwood laying around. Cheers!

Oh, so now it’s decision time. Since I can use my scrap cedar, I can build a building. Or, I can use pine and build some rolling stock, operations quality of course. Now I need to discuss the options with Tom Morrow, my shop foreman and “Smokey” Black, my engineer, to see what direction we need to go.

Dave,

To take the questioning one more step. If I have a pile of already cut cedar, if I use that but it does not exceed 1.5 x 3.5 x 53 when stacked together, is that acceptable? Or do I need to cut all new from a piece of dimensional lumber?

Thanks,

Chris

Hmm… I am drawing a complete blank right now. I have a 2x4x96 PTDF I can utilize and I want to build a mine structure for the Barrel of Fun layout, but I am scratching my head right now…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-undecided.gif)

Me, too. I want to finish just one damn section of my layout instead, but I see where maybe I can combine this challenge with that plan, so…

John, that’s what I keep trying to do, something that will bring me closer to my goal of having the railroad I want. Right now I am perusing the “Someday” list to see what I can build on that list. Right now I have 3 projects that are looking like suitable candidates.

What?

Yea. Ok.

Make that 4 projects.

Lol you guys crack me up. I am glad I am not the only one who went " oh s**t" what am I gonna build. While still clean g the shop I found a piece of redwood. Thatvwill be much nicer. But what to build.

We have Penalties?

“But no penalty for not …”

Sorry, but Rule #1!!!(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-yell.gif)(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-undecided.gif) We don’t need no stinking penalties!

The only ‘need’ I can find is a section house / garage for my in progress Mack bash. Goofy er Fine art napkin drawings in do time.

Due to restrictions set by the railroad, imported timbers are restricted to 50’ over 2 flat cars. 2 years ago, the fire in the saw mill took out the main bearing and a replacement became low priority. However we have been doing massive recycling and we think we can cobble together a framing 2x4’s worth of old cedar. Not to exceed 84’ in G24.(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

“Yes, I can do it, …but your REALLY not going to like it”
