MIK’s Build Challenge 2017
Let the fun begin.
All aspects governing the Challenge are to be applied under Mik’s build challenge Rule #1
Rule #1: Remember this is a “Fun Build Amongst Friends”

The 2017 challenge is a tribute to LSC’s own Ray Dunakin.

Ray’s remarkable work inspired me to copy some of his techniques, and now it’s your turn.

The 2017 challenge shall be:
Build What ever you would like using the quarry cut stones I will provide to you.
You will have 30 build days, and a Max budget of $30.00

TO KEEP THE PLAYING FIELD EQUAL (and here is 1/2 the challenge): Each participant will be provided a bundle of 225 cast Quarry Cut Stones. The stones come in standard 1 x 2 block proportions. These stones are correct to scale and size for 1:20.3. These stones will work equally well for all size scale, as the prototype stones were never to any standard industry sizing. If you want to make them smaller, go for it. There are a random number of 1/2 blocks and 1/4 blocks, and several (6) extra long stones for window or door headers. These stones are cast from resin, and can be cut or sanded easily. They are aprox. 1/8 in thick. I have molded in a brown/black color, and they can easily be painted.

The Final Build can be any size or shape that you want, of anything that you would like to build. You should try to use as many of the stones as you can. But no penalty for not using them all. You may use the extra stones as you see fit.

Some ideas as to where stones like these were used. Store Fronts, and even whole Buildings. Bridges and their Abutments. Retaining walls. Drainage Culverts. Foundations. Line side Buildings. MOW shacks. Bridge Pilings. Stations and Section Houses. Homes. Factories. Gas Stations. About everywhere.

RESTRICTIONS: Actual building starts on JAN 13th and Ends on Feb 13th. That gives you 5 weekends to get it done.
$30 (US$ or your local equal.) is the max you can spend on materials, paints, glue etc. If you buy a bottle of ink and use two drops, don’t worry about it, if you use the whole bottle , count it. If you have to use 2 inches of a 36 inch piece of brass, cause thats the shortest length they sell, figure the cost as 1/18th, you get the picture!
Any item that you already have in your hands as of 1 Jan 2017, does not count towards the limit. Any “Free” item you can procure, is free. This is on the honor system guys. Refer to rule #1
All contestants MUST post a “Build Log” in the Annual Build Challenge forum section of LSC. You have to declare your intentions of what you will attempt to build in the initial post. Post your napkin (drawings) with your first post. You can change it if you want to, but you must post it. NO phantom builds to pop up on the last day! Progress posts ( preferably with pics ) need to be made often. Recommended Build Challenge forum Title “Daves 2017 challenge log”. Something along those lines so every one will know, and be able to follow along.
Yes you can add more of your own stones to your construction if needed, BUT you must use up most of the provided stones.

Oh yea, I am in. Now I just have to figure out what to build.

Ok then! I’m in! Sounds like fun!

I definitely would like to join, but currently living in Honduras. Could it be possible if not to get a kit to maybe get the dimensions of all the stones in a kit and I could try making my own from wood?

Awesome idea I’m in.

Sure, why not? I guess I can learn about resin castings as a new media.

I’ll send you some cash to help with the postage.

John

Dave,

Sounds interesting! how well do you think these stones would hold up for outdoor use? Are the stones themselves weather resistant? And could they be glued to some sort of support, like plexiglass? where the glue would also be reasonably weather proof?

Thanks,

Scot

You keep this up and you’ll turn into the world’s large-scale building-materials supply store. All you need is to start manufacturing windows and you can independently finance your trips to Chama.

My New Years resolution is to send you a little change for shipping since this would be the third year in a row I meant to and didn’t get to it. I’ve been a bad participant.

Call out to Ray!

You are participating, correct? You can’t miss your own party, tribute, ordination, roast, funeral, or however you want to think of this challenge? No no no.

Finally!! The wait is over. I have been looking forward to this since last year. So, yes I’m in.

And I second John’s call to Ray. Come on Ray, it would be great to have you join the party.

Mee too. I need to send some cash.

Oh, you twisted my arm. Well, I twisted my own. Count me in. I’ve got an ambitious build in mind. Now to the kitchen for some big paper towels to start scribbling.

I’m in! First timer too. Going to be fun.

Chris

Im in and email sent. This looks looks like it will be a fun one.

I am in

Do these stones have a size in inches? We now know they are 1:2 , perfect for F and yet there are no standard sizes.

I’ve not a clue how far 225 will go …

Thanks Dave for keeping our fun alive.

John

Darn. I was going to sit out this year since I have a ton on my plate to finish before spring, but this is just too cool to pass up. I guess I’m in. Do you need a refresher on mailing addresses or do you have good records?

Deleted duplicate post

John, email it to him anyway, just in case.

John, 225 will go a bit more then 224 will, and a bit less then 226 will. I just need to figure out how big to build my build for it to look right, and then see how much of it can get stoned.

OK Guys… Here is what you get… and how.

Previously I had made the cut rock master molds for the Taylor Tim building. The mold held 75 pieces of stone.

Each casting generated a sheet of stones.

You will get Three sheets of castings in your kit…

How much area does this cover? More then the area that Ray D. used for his stone building. I laid them all out so you could get a size. The lines are 1 inch apart, Altogether just shy of 1 sq. Ft.

When you add windows and doors, the total coverage area grows. I played around and layed this out, and had some extras. ( doors and windows 1:20.3)

And the detail on the stones.

I have had some of this resin out doors 24/7/365 in my high altitude NM sun for years. I have detected some color fading, the manufacture suggests painting for the best UV protection.

I have used GOOP, E6000, and good old Liquid Nails to attach these to both plastic (roughed up the gloss) and wood. None have fallen off yet. I do not know how Ray D. attaches his, maybe he will chime in.
