Mik's Build Challenge 2014 - Adams Station

My Grandfather was a Trackman for the Pennsy with the additional responsibilities of Crossing Guard, and getting the fire going in the stove in the Flagstop Adams Station. I have only seen one picture of it, and of course it’s long gone. I was able to very carefully take the measurements of the remaining foundation. So I got my door, and lais out my plan on a napkin:

So today was to be the day I started construction. I got out all my old campaign signs, and was figuring out how to build corners. Well I saw Rooster using plastic he bought. Hmm. I just took down some old blinds in the back room, and the rods that you turn to open and close are plastic. Aha! I will drill into the plastic base and use these for corners and framing. Well, I got sidetracked cleaning out the shed for recycle pickup. Tons of old cardboard boxes and, What’s this? I found these bin dividers that don’t fit any bins I have. Look at this picture, squint a little, and they look just like the 3 sidewalls I need! Eureka!

Well, that’s it for today. My body and brain are both tired, and I have to go back to work tomorrow.

Later.

I like your choice of prototype Lou …however I’m a dumpster diver and ghetto builder so I really didn’t buy any plastic.

Rooster, dumpster diving is another hobby of mine.

Around here we just drive around the district on garbage day. My fabulous Irish wife calls these expeditions ‘lawn sales’. She taught me how. I drive, she spies. Don’t do it much any more, as we have enough stuff!
It amazes me what some folks toss out, though. I hear many of them are pretty deep in debt, too; go figure…
I like the idea of using plastic from old blinds, Lou. I hope you have a glue that’ll stick 'em! Let us know…

That’s a neat building Lou. My kind of building.

Looks a lot like Strafford station on the Main Line to Harrisburg.

Well Ken, there is probably an old Design Standard from the PRR. Hmmmm, maybe search the internet.

Now that I’m good and in pain from shoveling all day, I’m going to the back room to see how those sides will work out. I shoveled a path to the shed so I can cut sides and plastic rods. As soon as I fit something together, I’ll get more pichers.

Is that station still standing, Ken? If so, need pictures!

I doubt it… the last time I was up that way was 20 some odd years ago…

All I had left was the concrete base, but I was able to measure it for size.

My city has a 3 day policy for curb side signs. The police will pick them up if they notice them in the tree lawn too long. The dumpster is right next to the truck bay at the fire dept. Don’t mind if I do…

Terry

Well, for my 500th Post I was going to give a progress report with pictures. When I take the chip out of my camera and try to read it on my computer, it tells me I have to format it. Not. The chip reads in the camera.

So I do have all the sides glued and clamped and cut all the coroplast to go over the plastic walls. Trust me.

Now I have to go beat my head against the wall.

Ain’t technology wonderful?

I had that happen. A reboot of the computer and all was well again.

Back to update:
My first base was 3 layers of sign material duct taped together. Not stabile enough. So I took leftover Trex like material and connected them with one layer of sign.

I was able to drill into this to set my posts made from the rods that you turn to open the old blinds that were taken down. Then glued the sides made from bin dividers:

Norm Abrams said that a man can’t have too many clamps.

While the glue dried, I cut out all of the walls and roof from sign material. This will be hot glued to the plastic sides, then ready for paint and trim.

Coming on well Lou.

The mention of TREX always makes me smile and hungry. This is what TREX means to us in the UK.

Well, Alan yours is definitely better. Trex was marketed a few years ago as a wood substitute made from recycled plastic. Then someone sued them for color changing and I think slippery. Anyway, it’s not made anymore, and the kind that I finished my deck with didn’t really push their brand name, so I don’t remember what it’s called. So I use the term as I would Kleenex or Jello.

Trex is most definitely still made. They were sued for various issues, but have settled and are still in business.

Thanks, Bob. Although the UK product is more appetizing, it would have been very slippery around the pool!

Coming along very nice keep it up…Travis
