Dave i am good with what ever. I don’t mind paying postage but I also want the largest possible participation. So I defer and am willing to do whatever.

Devon makes a good point that we don’t want to eliminate those who might have a hard time with pay to play. So how about this: Those who are OK spending a few bucks chip in $10, the extra $1.70 is pooled to subsidize those who can’t pay? Only Dave would need to know who paid, and who didn’t.

Every once in a while that Radder guy comes up with a good idea. I’m good with this for sure.

I really like Jon’s suggestion and I’m willing to chip in a little extra $$ to help.

Wow Dave take it easy, I would vote for whichever is less stressfull on Dave.

… had a Heart Attack.

from my personal experience, that means only one rule: S L O W D O W N !

(if you are a hard learner - like me - you must be very lucky - like me - to survive a second reminder of this truth)

so, from this viewpoint, i would recommend to keep it simple (for you)

as nice, as it was for the rest of the group to have someone to organize and provide everything, you would find out, that doing the same now again would be a lot more stressing for you.

leave out the part, where YOU produce the key item and ship it.

in the one and a half (still have not finished the second) contests by MIK that i participated in, he simply gave a theme.

(if i remember right, one was to build a (any) MOW car, the other a building.)

Dave,

The crew weighed in, and they generally came down on the side of making it easy for you by having participants draw from local or commonly available materials:

  1. O.D.: The project must incorporate a set number of items gathered from your yard (i.e. rocks, leaves, feathers, etc.).
  2. Y.D.: The builder must draw a certain number of random items from their scrap box(es).
  3. O.S.: The builder must use foam as the core of the project.
  4. Kid-zilla: He could care less what people use, as long as it results in him getting a diesel.

Bottom line here is that we’re in, whether you select a theme, mandate the material, or ask for shipping. As many have said, we want you to do what is easiest for you. I probably learn more about model building from the MIK than I do from all other sources, watching as craftsmen apply their skills and diverse approaches to solving a defined modeling “problem.” That has been true across all three (2x4, build-what-you-want, chimney), and I suspect this year will be no different whatever your approach.

I like your list. I’d maybe add “5. Use at least four different pieces of packaging recycled from purchased items”. i.e. Use a bunch of the plastic packaging crap that you usually throw away. Maybe people have a week to get their items, and then post them for group approval before starting the actual challenge?

OK, that makes me think the theme should be: “Use Only Recycled Items”.

Wait, I did that one year and did Adams Station made from Election signs and plastic stuff. I think we were given a door. Still, there’s got to be enough unused stuff laying around everywhere.

I like the Mueller family idea. That could be entertaining.

Way back when, when I heard about MIK’s challenge over at My Large Scale (never participated) I thought it was a great idea to start with a common readily available item and then build on the cheap. One thing I always thought would be fun would to be use a toilet paper roll. I think that is something most of us may have laying around. And the idea are endless with how it could be used.

Just my two cents

If we have to start with a toilet roll, I’ve decided already that this is my project:

i’m afraid, you won’t be able to paint your roll in just the right shade of black…

Devon;

Really like the toilet paper roll idea. Used it for a structure project ages ago, but that was for S scale. Got a pretty good idea of what to do for 1:22.5/1:24.

I thought Shawn Viggiano’s boy might be the last one but I did sense another within the force!

Eric,

I will take the child if he suddenly finds himself homeless.

Rooster,

I’ll let him know!

I will add my two cents!

I have always felt Dave you shouldn’t be paying the postage. The ten dollar donation idea Ithink is a good idea. I also liked the idea of us providing our own item to build from and avoiding any shipping at all. That works for me too.

I never had a heart attack but have survived two strokes Over the past 20 years. I had to relearn to walk and talk the first time. I learned to just take my rime. Patience is a virtue! Look forward to the contest!

Amen!

Thank you Doug!

Get better and get strong Dave.

I have always liked the idea of starting off with the same common thing and letting our imaginations run wild. There are so many very clever builders on this site.

This year why not let Dave rest up and we could all start with a soup can or better yet a small tomato paste can. It only costs $1 and could be used on a structure as a water or fuel tank or on a piece of rolling stock.

Another thought would be starting with a dowel. The big box stores sell them in different sizes and we could all begin with say a 1/4" x36" long dowel.

Just some ideas.

Dave, Hope you are doing better. I would be good with any decision that is made… Thanks for all your hard work and dedication to keep the challenge going, However make it as easy as possible for you. You dont need the extra stress. Get yourself healthy and take care… T
