MIK16 A Whale's Tale

Imagine my high desert floor was once the ocean’s floor! Volcanic mountains are all around and we’re supposed to believe that fishes pooped here? Grody to the Max! To-tally dudes!

Deep deeep down, so deeep we use 3 eees. So deeep that it is yesterday’s light at the bottom … Actually, no. I found my vertebrae/fossil on the hill behind me, but I loved that line…

The poor Total Wreck mine played out after the silver and copper were taken, so the railroad set up a camp ground and gave mine tours and offered a playground for the kids. When the Fossil was discovered we brought it in as another attraction for our guests… part of the playground will include a swing ride.

My advisers were quite vocal and as usual squawked for their payoff before the job was complete!

Tent town gives our campers the full hardships of miner’s life.

The advisers are wasting their clucks, little do they know that this whole area is going 2’ up!

Their job done, it’s exit stage left!

My plan is to set up the fossil with a covered walkway and viewing platforms and an attached playground with a nautical theme…Don’t expect Disney World!

Fun build can’t wait. At 1 :24 that is one damn big vertebrae.

That rock weighs in around 60 pounds. I had a walk way for it once before, but a dinosaur broke it up… before we tamed it…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

With the RR being elevated, I can set up this scene on it’s own plank. I got lucky, the contest fits in with my remodeling.

When I was in Siberia I walked through whale bone arches…

I found myself with a roll of fancy napkins and a sharpie that hadn’t dried out…

OK that’s my story and I’m stuck with it now, unless I change me head. Yes David, head not mind.(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Semi hoping but going to build this anyway, I’ve been picking up these little odd subs from the pet store … yes aquarium props, good for kid sized swings.

I see that desk hasn’t cleaned itself yet!

John

That’s an entire roll of napkins… I love it. Those subs will be cool. I think I will like where this goes.

I love a good story… too bad we have to settle for this;

Less than 10 miles from me, on our meandering roads, is the Colossal Cave and Mountain Park. All the mountains in our desert are considered to be sky islands where the temperatures are cooler and ‘real’ plants grow. Where I live in the foothills is on the average 1 degree cooler than Tucson by elevation. Caves and mines tend to be found in the mountains too.

The Vail and Total Wreck Railroad was faced with a dying mine. The good years paid off all the equipment and as reality reared up a new direction was decided upon. Tents were erected and rudimentary facilities were built. People wanted reasons to make the climb. Explore the Old West Wulfenite mine… The Total Wreck.

We had uncovered a large fossil and put that on display with tin covered walkways.

At first the V and TW thought the Mining Experience would satisfy their coffers, but women and kids were frightened by bottomless shafts, creaking cracked timbers and falling rocks. An old cave the mine used to store explosives was cleaned up and stories of Train Robber’s Loot hidden somewhere within were fabricated…

This added attraction worked for a while, but as with most novelties and a modest customer base, it too soon faded in popularity.

This year the railroad hired Modest Dave, owner of the cave and re-branded him: Colossal Dave!

The latest addition is a playground for the kids (of all ages)!

Plans? Shirley you jest.

You’ll get them when I do.

John

That’s quite a story John. Anxiously awaiting the next episode.

BTW: Who is Shirley? (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

by the generation, he belongs to, i would think, her last name is Temple…

Shirley?

If I remember right, it’s the punch line from a comedy routine from about 50 years ago. I don’t remember the exact routine, but guy #2 says in response to something incredible that guy #1 says: “What are you talking about?? Surely you jest.” And Guy #1 says, “Don’t call me Shirley!”

Like I said somewhere else, I wish I could remember useful things from 50 years ago, or even last year.

You win all my recycled napkins! Though I remember it being over used in a stupid movie…

John

I found the saw blade I bought for last year’s contest, it wasn’t with the unused pin nailer I also got last year.

Today I am a sawmill!

See ya later when there will be a finger check!

John

Oh s*$t its serious, John has post it notes, game on.

John how old is that lap top. Looks like it could have been used in the apollo mission.

2 years … I was barely old old enuf then, but this was the Apollo keyboard …!

Contrary to popular trending smaller is not better for me so I went with the 19" screen. Formerly a happy Luddite the trend is towards a mobile platform of long and skinny, oh well.

I kept loosing pcs to electrical surges, so we figgured a battery interface should/could protect it.

Aren’t you glad you asked?

LOL in that picture it looks old school. now the one with the rubber key protectors that’s cool

Hey, I liked Airplane and Airplane2 the Sequel.

And they didn’t have laptops back during the Apollo missions, but they did have computers that “could fit into a single room.”

Progress!

New blade installed and a new zero-clearance insert was added and the running blade raised up through it. Thanks to the Tin Man for some thin plywood in the junk box from last years challenge. Tomorrow the 8" gets one too.

I slabbed up 4 chunks. Translation; I have 3"thick planks 11-14’ long, with the sawzall I chop off chunks 2-4’ depending on knots or imperfections. These I slabbed into planks with the thickness needed for lumber. The next step is over to the 8" table saw with a minimum kerf blade where I’ll slice off dimensional lumber.

All fingers intact and a nose full of dust. It was a good day.

John

Hey Dave,

If I have to rewire the outlet, does that count against my build fund?

The second saw, used to run fine with a little assist, today it took out the circuit! It’s my only outdoor receptacle! Instead of a circuit breaker it was tied into the bathroom GFI. But resetting the GFI only made it work inside.

When I can find some gumption I’ll test the line by pulling the covers. If it’s a bad GFI does that $8.00 count against the build?

John

John, since when does home repair count against a model build budget?

Uh, 'cause Contest caused it? Will the judges take that?(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-smile.gif)
