First off, technical difficulty. Doing exactly what I told the grandkids and everyone else NOT to do I got the results I thought would happen, I told everyone NOT to walk in the unsupported wall blocks of my RR in progress I took a big fall and wiped out my palm of my hand below the thumb ( big gouge from wall block), my hip very colorful bruise and above the Knee ( scratches from landing on the wall blocks, my ankle from starting the whole fiasco and some various left side dings and dents from being 6’3" and falling anywhere except on a pile of pillows My feet went to the right, and I landed somewhere around the black rock on my left side, I must note back in 2001 I had a fall at work that broke my collarbone , shoulder blade and 2 ribs, so the fact all that is still intact, I am grateful!
how I missed hitting the black rock I am not sure but I think that is the only thing I didnt hit
Anyway sore, 1 and a half handed I have been seeing huge progress on everyones builds so I best get some work done since next weekend I will have palns and unable to do work.
With with the main opening glued and pinned together I added the bracing, making sure that I made the sides the same… until I looked after I had come back from letting the glue dry and I noticed that the angle bracing I wanted to be mirror image is the same on both sides. Well I dont think I will do anything except hope not many people notice it
Next on the list is getting my trusty Japaneses pull saw ( i cannot imagine not having this around, I love how easy a pull saw works compared to a push saw) and cutting the boards to back the whole thing. While not a real difficult job being down about half of one hand made this take a little longer than anticipated.
Right now the framework is just sitting on the cut boards, I let them run long on one side and will trim everything up after they are glued down, plus I am looking at the leftover wood and trying to decide if I can make a retaining wall of any size for it or if I should do some into the tunnel work like Jon Radder is doing on his. That will be all for this week , unless I find some time before the weekend to get some more work on here.
Did you at least say “see this is why I said don’t walk here”. Glad you are only bruised. Being 6’3" just falling over is sorta like base jumping without a chute. Nice start on the portal.

Oh no Pete! Here’s to healing well. Been looking at various versions of those Japanese pull saws for some time. Guess I finally need to get my motivation motivated and go get one.
Glad to you’re ok. That is one of those “don’t do as I do…” moments. Portal is going to look good.
Isn’t it funny how we always point out the mistakes that are really not obvious and then say that we hope no one will notice? I did the same, then went to great pains to fix it; but in your case Pete I think it looks fine as identical.
I had to work this morning and decided to take the afternoon off and watch the AFC Championship game. Give you guys some time to catch up!
Forrest, the one I have is by no means an expensive one, one side is for rip cuts and the other side is for Cross cuts, different tooth rake and set, but what I like best is the ability to start a cut with an easy pull and then it just glides thru the rest of the cut.

Pete I was actually talking about someone else’s railroad build log. On his a piece of track made a cameo appearance early on, and then we didn’t actually see track again until page 35, or was it page 38?
Ok , got a little work done yesterday and today, as John C said earlier the portal will look better if it extends into the tunnel, so after surveying my pile of wood I decided I had enough to accomplish this late in the game feat of engineering. The afore mentioned goof up in the bracing has caused some odd looking post ends but I think I will be the only one to notice( at least that what Jon R says,) until judging comes
here is a shot of the back side, since I cut this on my band saw, I tried to keep all the rough sides to the back, and the better side on the face. the builders of this insist on the fact that most RR portals would be rough sawn wood anyway, but we are a classy bunch here so at least 1 sanded face in the exterior… hopefully
I propped it up and put a car on there to see how things are looking, it is leaning back because the front verticals are longer than the rest of the braces, when its all done i will trim them all to length
Still have more of the inside the tunnel wood to add, then its on to some detail type work, or at least some 10’ rule work. will not have a lot of time between now and finish time to do a lot, so hope I can get it up to LSC napkin standards. I did see one picture with a Horizontal piece just above the opening, like a visor or rock deflector, so that may get added if time permits

I took some time to visit my mom in Ca and on the way home we stopped at a G scale train store, Gold Coast Station in Tehachapi Ca., Holy wow the place is packed floor to ceiling and huge, anyway I got some switches, a USA Beer Car tank car and some track, so today I went back in to the garage and did some more work on the Portal.
I finished the inside walls of the portal and did some bracing , then looked at the picture online and decided to add the “visor” rock catcher whatever its technical name is, and then it needed some bracing so added them to it. Getting close to the finish line on this, I may do some stain, or may just let the redwood age naturally. the wood in front is about all the leftovers from the build. Not enough 2x12 to build a retaining wall on the left side, so I dont think I will tackle that yet.

i must say that my pin nailer , well actually the pins are miss behaving quite regularly, I have pulled may through and have some showing due to them going off target and popping out of their intended path, have not been “nailed” by any but I am sure it’s a matter of time. Rant over.
