OK Here I go biting off way more than I can chew I am submitting this as the build challenge napkin ( I didnt have any napkins near me when I started researching this, and my drafting class from high school kicks in at these times). Maybe I should just wing it so no one will hold me to any proper dimensions. But since a certian person from Northern Idaho has told me I have to enter and after carefully thinking over his suggestion of painting a 2x4 gray and calling it a retaining wall, I went 360 degrees from that then another 180 to come up with something that would actually maybe work. I have a 2x8 piece of redwood which will be ripped to the proper size as soon as we are given the highball to start. After drawing this up I looked at the other entries and saw one of the builders on this forum I look to for inspiration is also building a portal, I am thinking I went way way too detailed and intricate. Oh well, since almost everyone is worried they are not going to finish, I might be in the running. Oh and I think everyone should mention in their opening what scale they are using. I am going with 1:29, so I will use an appropriate size of 2x4. my piece is slightly short so I may have to add some toward the end of the build.

yeah Dan, a redwood GP 38- 3W I guess !LOL. about time you showed up, have not seen you here all last year.

I know, Pete. I got tied up on some other projects this summer and spent the fall watching my son play his last year of football. But I wouldn’t miss the challenge.

You recognize what model dismal it is from a front on sketch? Darn, I can barely tell the difference between a Geep and an SD

hmmm…

i think, you should include the retaining wall idea.

a portal does not use up all that wood, ou have to use.

Well as some may know I have a very cantankerous table saw which will not for the life of me and my fingers allow me to make good square cuts on a consisntant basis. so after cutting my piece of redwood from a 2x8 down to a 2xnot quite 4 and attempting to make any smaler wood would not be the safest I turned to my band saw and whacked everything down to a scale 10" square stock and some 12" square with some off cuts for 2X10 to fill the back side. Problem #1 is band saws do not give the smoothest cuts , so I am either going to snad for hours ot maybe get my small piece sled and run everything through the thickness planer I will run some test pieces to see who much thinner things will be when they are finished. One of these days the table saw is going to have a horrible accident and i will get something nicer, like a roll around contractor saw. anyway I think all the sawing is done for now unless I make some huge mistakes.

Since I do all my work in the garage, when I remember to stick the hose in and turn it on I have a big shop vac for dust control, so not much I can show for the sawdust pile competition. today will be drawing up a full size pattern to begin cutting the various pieces. Pictures or it didnt happen will be later.

Well David I drew it so I could call it whatever I wanted and that would be how I saw it. And since I have a gp38 as a reference to look at , yes my “dismal” is one.

ok Boomer I found a paper towel hid the straightedge and did a proper entry drawing hope this late attempt will be allowed to keep me entered and entertaining the group when I fail massively to live up the my drafting abilities. Looking forward to a giant figure for my RR when I win worst what the heck is that award

still not sure on the overall height of this project. Waiting on some dimensions ( height) of a double stack container car before I go forward.

Pete have you even looked at a piece of wood yet. Or are you still fiddling withe a napkin.

my wood has been made into scale pieces, I did that Saturday evening now its finalizing the design and starting the full scale pattern drawing. Or something to that effect to get the ball rolling

For the Doubting Devons here is some proof of work and wood being planed

The piece of plywood in my planer is for thin stock. since under 1/4" is not recommended

Below is all my stock after planing to demensions

I started with a piece of wood that had tenons on each end so that is why the ends are cut at angles and there are some with really thin pieces on the ends. Now to make a full size pattern on the piece of plywood on the table andthen from there its a lot of time with my Japanese pull saw and small miter box. So far $0.00 spent, but I may have to go get a small saw for my miter box.

I was thinking about that yesterday , Dan. I love the Planer, and was going to buy a Granite Bed Table Saw but when I had the $$ I just missed out of the last onethe dealer here had and said Steel City has gone out of business. Look close and the adjustment handle for the planer is a pair of vice grips, the cheap plastic handle where it mates to the D shaped male end got rounded off , so I use the vice grips to adjust.
