In this video I visit the Goldome Mine and Mill, a modern abandoned mining facility in the Mojave desert.

The mill buildings have been badly vandalized. I had to use creative camera angles to minimize the extensive graffiti, and also retouched some shots. I refuse to give vandals the attention they crave.

This is the sixteenth (and last) in a series of videos from my 2019 trip, where I explored old mines, mining camps, ghost towns and other historic sites in Nevada and the Mojave desert.

I love the stinger missiles on the roof. Ready for anything…(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

I loved the last video. The missiles are great! You must get a lot of looks and have some interesting conversations with folks. Have fun!

Thanks. That one was three years ago. After that trip I bought a drone and retired the rockets.

On March 19th I had the rare (for me) opportunity to go to Mt. Laguna during a significant snow storm. It had already been snowing during the previous two days, so there was 6-8 inches of snow on the ground when I arrived, and more coming down.

The trees were decorated with a heavy blanket of snow that turned stately pines into fanciful Christmas trees:

Oaks and other deciduous trees were transformed as well:

Winds were light, and I was able to make numerous flights with my drone. I flew it over, around, under, and between the snow-draped trees, often while snow was still falling, and captured some truly epic video footage and stills:

I went home satisfied with the both the experience, and the amount of great video I had shot.

Then…DISASTER!!

I couldn’t find the microSD card that had all of my best footage from the drone! Somehow I had lost it after putting in a new card. All I had were the last two, brief flights that were on the new card.

Two days later after most of the snow had melted I went back to the place where I had removed the full card from the drone. This was on a little-used driveway to a private observatory. I searched through the remaining snow and ice that still covered portions of the asphalt, but no luck. :frowning:

.

Beautiful, Ray. I love the snow … in pictures … mot so much in person. Bummer about the video. I can only imagine how good it would have been. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, snow is beautiful to look at, and nice to visit briefly but I wouldn’t want to deal with that much cold for very long. The toughest thing about flying the drone was that I couldn’t use gloves. My fingers got painfully cold in a very shot time. At one point I pulled a soda out of the cooler, and thought something was wrong because it felt warm. Then I realized my fingers were just that much colder than the can!

Thanks to a late-season storm I was able to get enough footage to complete this video…

Enjoy this stunning aerial tour of the scenic wonders of winter in the mountains! I shot this during several trips to the Laguna Mountains of San Diego County as winter storms decorated the landscape with snow and ice.

When you think of San Diego, snow is the last thing that comes to mind.

Yeah, we’re lucky to have mountains only an hour away. Even there, it doesn’t snow very often, just a few times each winter and some winters won’t see much snow at all.

Great video, BTW.

Stunning video, Ray. Thanks for sharing.

BTW, during one of those flights, the props iced up and before I could bring the drone back, it went into emergency mode and landed. Fortunately it came down in a small clearing and not in the top of a tree.
