Megaweapon Hits The Trail

Lots of cool buildings shown. Are there any pictures of it from back in the day? Must have been some sort of hard life.

Not much rust…too dry?

I searched and searched but couldn’t find any vintage photos. Same with almost all of the other places I visited on this trip

Yep, pretty dry. Not as dry as the valleys but dry enough.

Wow… What a fabulous video of a fabulous mine setting.

Ray, your still shots, ground video, drone video, titles, and especially narration, make this a truly wonderful program. If Ken Burns saw this, he’d be jealous as all get out.

I’m jealous, holy cow… I spent my younger years mine hunting in Toulumne and Sonora counties, but left it all for the East Coast when I was 24.

This mine has so much fun structural content, and it’s amazing how much is still standing. Thanks for documenting it all Ray, while it’s still in this condition.

Thanks. I really like the ore bin and trestles, and the way it’s all built on the cliff. I want to do something similar on my layout, if I can find the right place for it.

We have all come to expect an informative and entertaining videos from you Ray. What great ideas for railroaders there are in them. I guess many of us wonder if we could site and build some mine on our railroads, But for those without time or space we will just be content with your excellent offerings. Thanks Ray.

I always expect a snake Ray AAAArgh!, but I am ready when I see it. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Enjoying seeing scenery which I have never seen before and am unlikely to makes watching worthwhile. It is also pleasing to see a night sky not contaminated with light pollution. Seeing the quarter crescent new moon reminds me of my family in Indonesia. When they look at the moon there they know that Dad will see it in a few hours time as well (clouds permitting (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)).

If I didn’t know better, I’d swear I was watching a National Geographic show. Well done, sir!

Orizaba Mine, NV 2020

Join me as I explore some very picturesque ruins at Orizaba, NV and the Orizaba Mine. This was one of the most interesting sites I visited during my 2020 trip. The mine’s structures are over 110 years old, and include two stationary boilers, a head frame, hoist, and other artifacts. You’ll also see the cabins of the old mining camp.

Well, Ray, there is a great idea for anyone wanting to model an old mine. I guess quite a few of us have a Bachmann Gramps tank we could use.

I see retirement has been VERY hard on you Ray!

Is that a varmint or drone shadow 2:55 in on the rocks against the tank car?

Good stuff and learning from it !

Thanks !!

Rooster, that’s the drone’s shadow. Also, it’s not a tank car, though it looks like one. It’s one of two boilers at the mine.

Aragonite Mine, NV 2020

This is a small but very cool mine in western Nevada. It has an unusual headframe, and all of the hoist house machinery is intact.

A second viewing of your video Ray does show the two boilers and not a tank car. There is a lot too see in you vids. However you could still bash a tank car to simulate the boilers I guess.

Ray, I’ve spent about the last hour catching up on all of your great adventures. What magnificent scenery and wildlife. Living my life in the heavily forested southeastern US has given me little appreciation for the desert landscape of Arizona and Nevada, but through your videos, I have been able to witness the grand beauty of this area. I certainly enjoyed the history behind the various mines, but the inclusion of the wildlife and the vast night sky is what really made the videos for me. Many thanks for allowing us to tag along.

Come along as I explore a rarely-seen mining camp in a remote area of western Nevada. I’ve given this mine a fake name to protect it from vandalism.

The mining camp includes a mill, a well-built cabin, a garage and workshop, outhouses, and a water tank. There are also ruins and artifacts from an earlier period of the mine.

Another great video, Ray.

Ray,

Thanks as always for sharing. Quick question for you… Are these mines “abandoned,” with no legal owner, or are they “mothballed,” with an owner waiting for the market to make the mine profitable again?

As an aside, it is amazing to me how the desert preserves these structures! It almost looks like they could be cleaned and reoccupied with little preparation.

Thanks,

Eric
