Not wanting to be a "nit-picker" in all this as I'm impressed as hell with the structure, but where do the chimineys originate and how do they get past the window and door? I didn't notice a set back from the front or back wall of the building, but it's hard to tell from the angle of the pix.
Time to paint. First thing to paint is the floor. Itās not REALLY necessary, but if I donāt, Iāll just see the dirt and muck under the building.
It does make a difference, but it looks like a couple of coats will be necessary.
I decided to paint the foundation and āconcreteā trim color first; itās just a light gray. I left some spaces where Iāll but the stairs and the loading docks.
Finally, the brick color. Bricks are a real pain to paint. Itās tough getting all the mortar cracks filled. And, it turns out I probably should have waited to paint the trim colors, as I ended up getting a lot of the brick paint on the trim. Oh well.
Wowā¦that color just doesnāt look right. Hereās a few with just the room light.
The ādoesnāt look rightā red actually does look rightā¦if itās a brick building thatās been paintedā¦and Iāve seen a lot that were. On the other hand, if you take some water based mortar color wipe it on with a rag and go back with a clean damp rag and wipe it off the bricks you will get nice looking mortar joints and it will change the red considerably.
Oh, and welcome to the āit doesnāt look right clubā :Dā¦
Nowā¦back to my concreteā¦
Heheā¦actually, thatās in my plans. I already tried a wash on the chimneys and it looked good. Need to have this brick dry a few daysā¦
What I really meant is that the color in the picture didnāt look like the color it IS. Anyway, it looks like brick in real lifeā¦
In my case my concrete looks better in print than in real lifeā¦
Bruce,
If itās as windy in VA. as it is in PA, maybe you should have considered using real bricks and concreteā¦
Very fine job, I might add!!
Bruce,
I withdraw my comment that the building would look good with white painted brick! In brick red it looks fabulous!!! Your judgement was 100% right!
Iām unrepentant enough not to be sorry about being a troublemaker however.
Well, I do believe Iām getting closer to completion. [:D] I put a wash over the brick and a darker one over the foundation, so itās toned down a bit. I still have to glue the steps in place - the ones on the other end are drying. And, I have to complete for the covered portion of the loading dock on the left. I decided to go ahead and try one of the vinyl signs I got from Del. Iām very impressed! I will probably put a coat of Krylon matte flat over it, as the black is still gloss.
HOLY COW Bruce, that looks fantastic!
Hey, look over there! (Bob sneaks off with it)
How did you get the bricks to show through the vinyl so well? Did you press it into the grooves, or did you just use the vinyl as a mask to paint the sign?
Thanks guys. I have really enjoyed building this one. Ray, I used the other end of a paintbrush to burnish the vinyl into the bricks. Iām done!
Now, I have to prepare the ground and get ready to move it outside. Thanks again to Richard Smith for his assistance and guidance. Sure, heās a troublemaker, but he also willing to help!
Bruce Chandler said:That pretty well describes everyone on this list. Best friends you could, if you can put up with them. ;-)

Real nice, Bruce. Youāve done a great job describing your progress. The people really bring it to life.
How do we compete with that?
Great job!
Pidjions or sea gulls?
Bruce the whole idea of storing train just went to a whole other plain. It is beaitful, a real work of art .
Thanks to all, again. What a joy - my workroom is now CLEAR!!![:D] Jean and I carried it out on my lunch hour. Iāll eventually put some darker rock around the base, but this is all I have right now. The cars fit in quite nicely. The second layer is held by 23" long strips of TUFBoard.
Now I just have to get someone to move that house out of the background.[:D]
āNow I just have to get someone to move that house out of the background.ā
Oh Bruce, donāt worry about that little house. Iām sure it belongs to the owner of the mill. My eyes only see what they want to see.
Absolutely fabulous!! I can see why Richard Smith is such a painā¦youāre giving him too much competitionā¦
Awesome!!!
