Large Scale Central

Mancos

With this unseasonably nice weather the RGS track crew decided to get a head start in Mancos.

After taking up the track the new switches were put in pace.

And while all this was going on a pair of Redtailed Hawks decided to keep an eye on things…

It was a nice day Ken. I ran a few trains and started thinking about some additions to my layout.

There must have been a rooster close by. Those Hawks smelt him.

Sure take advantage of the weather to get RR work done. :)

All you “Eastern Boyz” with good weather make me envious. All’s we have is rain, snow, and 45 mph winds. Can’t even get around the layout for all the mud and water on the ground.

BTW nice looking addition there Ken, you didn’t have any small pets out helping you did you. Those hawks look pretty hungry.

nice start on the rebuild…

Rebuild is looking good so far. But what I’m really lookin’ at is that garden tractor. I have the exact same model. Yours still looks like new, mine is beat. I guess having teenage kids when it was new is the reason.

I was thinking he shook them mouses out of their houses with the RR work

Looking at your pics, Ken. I didnt realize that you constructed your base almost identical to mine. I would assume that since your layout is much older than mine that the method works. That makes me feel relieved. Because I was a little worried about frost heave.

It is always nice to have some good weather to get a jump on this summers projects. Good luck.

Jake,
I got the idea from Bruce Chandler, who constructed his layout the same way a few years before I did.

I get a little bit of frost heave which is easy to fix by just pressing down on the track.

The only problem with frost heave is the mess it creates, especially after a party. We’ve had too eliminate Mr. Frost from our A list, around here, especially as he just cant seem to find the loo. :stuck_out_tongue:

I see that you anchor you ladder with posts (PVC) into the ground. Has anyone tried eliminating the posts, and just laying the ladder directly on the ground, with rocks or bricks making up the difference in low spots? Wouldn’t that take away most of the problem with frost heave?

Most of the layout around the pond is laid directly on the ground. There’s a few spots where I did some extra track work that I used some posts, mainly to hold curves in place. I added some here just to keep it level till I can get around to getting some gravel. I don’t think the mulch place is open yet.

Looking great Ken. The new station looks right at home in it’s location. What did you use for the foundation/platform? Looks good.

The platform is made from 1x6 pieces of Trimplank. I had to run them through the joiner to get the rounded edges squared up, then glued and clamped 4 pieces together.

I have to agree with Randy, “That looks great”. I can’t wait for the weather to get better so I can start working on my railroad.

Keep the pictures coming Ken!

Looking good Ken. Plenty of room for more builds now , so you can fill in the town.

Looking great. You’re on a roll!

Ken, nice work… will be a neat improvement to your railroad…

I really like the depot with tracks on both sides.
I have plans to do the same, although the tracks are from two different mains.
I still need to build the depot. The prospect of gluing 10 million cedar shingles has stopped me dead in my tracks so far

Yea, I did that once. On the sawmill............I'll stick to the plastic sheets from now on......;)

Got rained out today, so a trip to Lowe’s may be in the offing for some more Trimplank for the 2 sidings.
