Making 55 Gallon Steel Drums in 1/20.3

Boomer,

Nice work. I appreciate the efforts that go into making those crimps and bands - and they DO look nice.

Not that I want to burst your bubble, but there are some drums already done by ScaleArtModels.

Now, I don’t see any flour barrels, but they do have some other parts: http://scaleartparts.com/page7a.html

They also make doors and windows. I’ve got a lot from them, and it holds up well.

Also available here.

They are also available at Lowes and most craft stores. Though they are wood.

Hehe. Now I understand. But the original post sounded like you were lamenting the lack of 1:20 drums.

Yeah, so we were just helping out. Yeah, that’s the story.

I think it’s cool that you’re making them and I also look forward to your solution to the wooden flour barrel shortage.

Oh yeah, stay away from real wood!

Boomer,

Could I get 100,000 of them?

I say that in jest but one of my fondest memories of going to G-ma’s as a kid was passing the rail yard where they stacked thousands of these drums in massive piles. All different colors. I never understood why!

A neat scene to recreate but a bit impractical!

Nice work.

He just forgot to mention that he’s as tight as one of those bungs he keeps talking about

Boy George??

The more they pick on you, the more they like you.

At least that’s what Hollywood told me.

And dang if we don’t pick on Boomer a lot. If I’d have caught this thread earlier, I’d have said get some plastic rod and turn them on a lathe.Or better yet crimp the two or three rings in some old beer cans and roll your own. cost about $.02 per 10 cans plus aggravation while doing either of the above.

Very nice work so far Boomer, and don’t let them get you down. We all cast items to save the model dollar for more stuff.

Holy crap you can make them that cheap? I always thought casting was kinda spendy.

Boomer,

Very credible looking drums! Fine work.

Those came out pretty darn good Boomer. Should look great in groups or stand alone.

Great work !
I can’t do a wonderful job like this one 'cause when I don’t succeed I use a big hammer…

I cast all the time its really cheap , well not as cheap as it used to be …but then what is… I reccommend the products from Micromark, its all a 1:1 mix ratio, no fudging about…an a little goes a long ways…

http://www.micromark.com/complete-resin-casting-starter-set,8174.html

Roughly $80 gets ya started and there are several of us on here that cast, and would be more than glad to answer questions…or mebbe even do a class perhaps…

I’ve cast everythign from Switch Frogs to Federation Starships, it beats the crud outta build ALOT of one part…

Boomer,

Sorry to check in so late, but I bought a bunch of wooden 55 gallon drums at Lowes in their specialty drawers. They scale out somewhere about half way between 20.3 and 22.5. I don’t have a good answer for an open top barrel, other than figuring out how to hold it and bore the center out with a good quality 15/16 diameter forstner bit.

Boomer,

I have a bunch I have purchased with the intent of hopefully finding the old Aero sanding sealer. That stuff worked great at sealing wood surfaces. I used it on some ‘O’ gauge steel side hoppers we made suing 1/8 inch hard board masonite for the sides. Sealed them up with the sanding sealer and you could not tell it was not metal or plastic.

As for hollowing them out, I plan to make a fixture to hold them on the drill press. One of my projects ‘down the road’. I will share when I get there. For you it might be worth an attempt as the proportions, especially the rolled top and stiffener rings are quite good.

You can fill your car, with the drum that wears the star … the big bright TEXACO star!

(Ok, now you’ve got it ringing in your ears too, if you’re old enough … my work here is done! Oh, and nice job … )

Matthew (OV)

I got my drums and thought they were fine Boomer. Have to get them painted and outside.

Boomer,

Awesome car!

Best,
