Large Scale Central

MakerBot at the local library

Hi Guys:

My local library will soon have two MakerBot units, a 3D scanner, laser cutter and a green screen for those who want to create their own Star Wars type videos.

Free courses on the applicable software will also be available.

This sounds like a lot of fun. Design models on CAD software and then just print them out. The facilities will be overwhelmed. There was a massive crowd of folks today at the library just to view three MakerBots in action.

I am definitely signing up for the courses.

Maybe a largescale V&T 4-4-0 is in my future as none of the large scale mfgs will build one.

Norman

My Markoff would be happy to see the end project.

This is a good example of why you should enter your city and state in your profile. We’re all running to your library, but we don’t know which way to run!

Lou,

If you don’t know where your going then any road will take you there. “Lewis Carrol”

Thanks for posting this, I forgot one of the local libraries started a program like this years ago

If memory serves he’s in Ottawa, Ont Canada.

I’m flabbergasted that they have the funds for that, our library system - through out the Okanagan Valley - sure doesn’t. We’re happy with a good selection of books, but then again we don’t live in Canada’s Capital. OTOH our weather is much, much better.

Lou,if you ever come near syracuse check out our library

What can I use in the Fab Lab?

Hardware and software for making things! This includes 5 3D printers, a 3D scanner, a laser cutter, a vinyl cutter, sewing machines, hand tools, paper craft tools, jewelry making tools and kits, knitting & crochet kits, community donated materials, and more

Hi HJ:

What does an Ottawa Municipal Library have to do with the Federal Houses of Parliament located in downtown Ottawa?

The Ottawa Municipal Library funding is no different than the Okanagan Valley Municipal Library funding.

The Ottawa Municipal Library is under the Province of Ontario regulations.

Complain to your local Municipal Gov’t and to the Province of British Columbia.

Given the difference is our weather, I think I should write to the Minister of Finance and ask that BC residents be Federally taxed at twice the percentage as Ontario residents as the BC warm weather living lowers the BC residents cost of living and lengthens their lifespan. Sounds like a good idea?

The truth be told, at the present moment Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia are “have not” Provinces and are now heavily subsidised with Federal transfer funds from the oil sales of Alberta.

So call up the Premiere of Alberta and ask for funding for this library program.

Of course Hans, you already know all of this. Why are you trying to stir things up?

By the way, the funding for this Municipal Ottawa Library program is coming from …

the American Embassy !

The purpose is to promote American technology in Canada. As Ottawa is ( or was ) the high tech centre of Canada, this is an American Government technology promotion for the Ottawa high tech. region.

Hans, do not bother replying to my reply as I am not interested in politicising toy trains.

If real estate values had not sky rocketed in B.C. , I would have moved long ago to Victoria to enjoy the Rocky Mountains, Roger’s Pass, the Queen Charlotte Islands, etc. Simply paradise.

Norman,
OCCRE in Spain is advertising the “Jupiter” 4-4-0 for gauge-1 track. It is 1/32nd - the correct scale. Did you want a 1/29th version - or maybe a 1/22.5 ?

Hi Pete:

I have not heard of the OCCRE mfg. . Do you have a web page address?

Thank you,

Norman

They have a US outlet, but I don’t see this model on it:

Oh she sure is pretty. Like I need another locomotive. But she sure is pretty

Signed up for a free course at the library on how to use the 3d printer, lasercutter, and vinyl cutter

This will be my first project printed

Plan on making a mining car with the truck if it works .05c a gram, this should be under $1

Thanks for posting this thread

I think that is a great idea for Libraries. It allows access to equipment most of us wont buy on our own.

Hi Mark:

Neat first project.

For myself, my first project will be a locomotive cab.

Thinking back to the days of MLS and the work of Dave Fletcher’s Master Class Series, what held many folks back from participating was their level of manual skill to cut the various detail parts and in particular to craft the wagon top boiler.

Anyone can move a mouse. No manual skill required there. Then just print out the parts.

Too bad that the 3D printers were not available back then.

These 3D printers are going to enable folks with almost zero manual skills to design and assemble whatever models they want. This is why the youngsters are now into video games and not into building models as we did in our youth. Anyone can play a video game. Not everyone can carve out a model.

Within five years the availability and access to 3D printers is going to be a huge game changer.

I just looked at a TrainWorld LGB sale. Almost 100.00 US for a box car !

Yep, no way that I could afford this hobby as a new entrant today.

Norman

This project is already on Thingverse as an lgb style car

I doubt its more then 25 to make

Hi Mark:

Here is a six foot long MakerBot Big Boy loco !

Designed to test the limits of the MakerBot 3D printer.

There is no doubt. 3D printing is going to make largescale locomotive models widely accessible at a low dollar cost.

3D printing may even bring back “G” scale to its former large membership participation levels.

Norman

I saw that, almost big emough to ride on

Hi Mark:

Here is a USRA Mikado by a 3D printer:

http://electecnik.blogspot.ca/

Looks like this 3D printer technology has become mainstream just at the right time for largescale hobbyists given the latest surging of new product pricing.

Norman

I guess I’d better dust off my printrbot Jr. and get it running! I know I need some 1:25 scale wooden auto wheels.
