I feel sick…

And trees are such a pain in the ____! That is the reason for going South and a bit east! Not trees that fall down or shed branches!

I feel sick too for you Bob. Looks like you need another work day this spring/summer.

Bummer guys. :( If you lived near me I'd come over with my stuff and give you a sweet price. Took down my new neighbors trees for free just to get rid of them. He had to drag the brush out front but we did the rest.
Would be nice to have a tree service around that understands that this stuff is a bit more than toy trains. Already went through this once...

I hear you Bob. My view is that trees belong in the woods or at least as far away as needed so they won’t fall on stuff you care about. It’s crazy how many people love those 80 and 90 foot pines near their houses. AT least a couple times a year I have to get them out of pools or living rooms.

If you can chop it up yourself and get it out front I can chip it up. If you’ve never used a chain saw be sure to wear kevlar chaps ($80) but will save a leg and a life. And never walk around with a running saw unless the chain brake is on

dang, Bob… Hope there’s not too much damage to the railroad… Mom lives in Peabody, but she said she only got like 2 and 1/2 inches and it’s all melted off the streets… She did say that Worcester got like 16 inches… or, maybe that was Springfield…

The official total for my rea was 15.5 inches. Not much tree damage and layout ok. What helped me is my trees dont have many leaves. Most fell off last week. I still have no power may be Few days ugh. I tried running trains but leaves and twigs kept falling on the tracks from the winds. Maybe try tomorrow
Hollywood sorry i lost u on chat last night. Thats when power went out. Bob sorry to hear about your damage.

Bob and Hollywood, did you guys have a chance to assess the damage before night fall. Thinking that maybe some of the snow melted during the day.

My RR looked like that yesterday and I was sweating it …however today a lot melted …no snapped branches on the layout and the trees/bushes are bowing back towards the sky!

Bob & Hollywood,
Sorry to see the damage to the GRR’s.
On the bright side, your homes are OK.
Ralph

I was out there with the chain saw for several hours this afternoon. Two 8" branches hit Burke yard directly, some wood damage, some track damage. Wont know the complete extent until the snow melts. Some 4-6" branches took out the upper loop through deck bridge and 5 feet of track there. The rest of the upper loop is shifted around a bit, there were LOTS of big branches on top of it. The lower loop took most of the hit in the back, at least 10 feet is twisted and bent, also took direct hits.

Three oak trees will have to come down, and two of them are inside the loops. So to let the tree crews in there, Ill have to take the loops apart. No way to get a boom truck near enough.

Sorry to hear of damage to your railroads, in my part of Australia we don’t have snow (I wouldn’t live here if we did) but trees can still be a pain.
I had new neighbours move in a few years back, they were all polite and helpful when I asked if they could remove a problem tree while they were clearing the yard (well it was a problem to me), they cut the tree right back to the stump but never got around to removing the stump. The tree has shot back worse than ever and I noticed on the weekend that I have all there suckers popping up on my side in my railway area, now I have to ask again, if they did the job properly the first time all would be fine now. I might have to bribe them with money this time to make sure it gets done properly.
My problem is small compared to yours Bob and I hope the damage is minnimal, mine is easy fix but I fear yours won’t be.

Wayne

My RR was all dry and operating well.inside you know.

If the tree guy has any respect for a customer's property, he wouldn't bring a boom truck in there in the first place. If he doesn't have a set of tree climber's and lot's of handlines, then he isn't much of a tree guy to begin with...........while it does make it a lot easier with a boom, any good, self-respecting tree surgeon worth his salt should be able to "hook it"...........I've had about a dozen or so trees taken down here and not once did the guy I used try to bring a heavy boom truck across my yard (especially if he has to cross a drain field)

But you can look on the bright side. You’ll have plenty of firewood in the coming winters…

(Too bad Fred’s neighbor, Mike, lives so far away. He took down that huge pine tree in Bellamy in Fred’s back yard and not a bit of damage to the RR.)

Day two with no power from grid temp is a warm 25.

Bob, we often do removals with a crane. I’d only have to get to a point 100 feet from the tree. Send me an email or call and I can give you some ideas. Up please… That’s my boy…although he is 31

The medium size crane.

The bigger crane. This is the whole tree cut from the ground…85feet tall

Sorry to hear about that Bob. I’ve got a bunch of oaks in my yard and I dread the big storms.

Sure hope you don’t find more damage when the snow melts.

Just got on and saw the reports of the damage. I’m sorry. From this distance not much more that we can do. Be safe while you clean up.
