Im looking for some plans for 4 wheeled rolling stock in 1:20 scale. I want to make some things to go with my Cricket. I want to build some flatcars, box car, caboose. I plan on using coil sprung journals with them. Need something to get me started in sizes etc… thanks
Check with the 2012 challenge thread on this list. Dave Taylor (I think that the correct name) has plans for 20’ flatcar/gondola in 1:20.3. It looks like the flatcar can become a tank, or a caboose, or a boxcar in addition to the flat/gondola.
He’s got the kit for the contest, and PDF plans. The contest is underway, but he might give you a kit after the contest is over, if he’s got any left!
Dick,
Dave Taylor’s “kit” is for an 8 wheeled car. Shawn is looking for 4 wheeled cars.
Shawn. Look under Doug Arnold’s challange build, I have a set of what I call quarry flats
that might fit your needs, they are short but could easily be built longer. I haven’t took the time to draw up a set of plans for them, but they are simple, and if you think that they would work, I’d draw them up.
Dave
Shawn, I have a bunch of plans here, just need t get down to look at them
Jason Kovac said:Jay I was going to e-mail you. When you get back from Diamondhead we will get together. Let me know what your schedule looks like. Thur and fridays work best. Saturday is do-able but wont have as much time. Ill touch base with you when you get back.

Thanks Dave Ill take a look. Im looking for something around 8 inches long and 4+ inches wide.
Shawn, I don’t know if you really need “plans”. Take a look at Phil Dippel’s 4-wheelers: http://www.philsnarrowgauge.com/4-Wheeler.html Settle on a basic frame size and look at all the variations.
Bruce thanks thats where I got my initial idea for some 4 wheeled cars. I really like Phils stuff but too bad he doesnt sell them seperate. I got the basic dimensions from Phil a while back. Wish I could get a close up of each car seperate and underneath. Wanted to see how he does the frame and the journals with the frame.
Shawn, I’ll send you the pics of the underside of my Quarry Flats tonight… They are really simple, and with your new pin nailer you could whip out several in an afternoon…
Shawn, I had him cut me a caboose a few years back - basically a four wheeler.

There’s some more details here: http://jbrr.com/html/bobber.html Basically just Ozark journals…not much under body details.
I like that Bruce. Whats the height of the caboose not including the cupola (from the top of the journal up?
Dave that would be great thanks.
Shawn, Here are the basic dimensions - in scale feet, since I model in 1:20; you probably want to scale it appropriately.

The drawings are not totally accurate for the prototype; but they should be great for what you’re wanting to do.
Shawn,
I have all the old pull out plans from GR.
There were quite a few four wheel cars in them. (If memory serves me. )
I’ll never build any. You want the plans?
I bought a few of the Accucraft ones a few years back and use them from time to time.
John thanks. If you dont wont them i can def use them. Let me know if i owe you anything. Ill send you my adrress. thanks
Shawn, I stumbled on these the other day reading a 2’ forum I browse every once and again and though of you. Although they are 2’ prototype, they sure fit the character of your railroad, and I didn’t think a re-gauge would damage the overall appearance.

They are even of a lumber company prototype.
Nice pics Bob! Wouldn’t mind a set like this in my backyard

Bob I really like the small engine with the plow. Might be able to do something like that using my Mack engine and I have a similar plow like that, Hmmmmm know you got me thinking. Thats the sort of stuff im looking for, for my Cricket and Lumberjack. The smaller stuff like that has always appealed to me. I should go 7/8th.
I love the caboose. Does the conductor have to stand on anything to see out of the cupola - or is that his ‘head room’ ?
