Lolly's Diner

I know what your thinking… “Oh great, another diner made from a bashed Bachmann coach. How original. Can’t wait to see that!” Well, your in luck! 'Cause I started work on another diner made from a bashed Bachmann coach! Coincidence? Maybe.

I’ll try to do something a little different than all the other B’mann diner bashes. I found a picture of a diner that I really liked on the internet. It’s called “Mickey’s” and it’s located in St. Paul. I’m not going for an exact replica, but I like the style and the colors of “Mickey’s.” I think it will blend well with the rest of my mid-century town.

For starters, I hacked out some of the window dividers, replaced the 2 short sides (to get rid of the end doors), and shortened the roof- so that it didn’t overhang the sides. I also filled in the wainscoting on the bottom half of the car to give it a smoother surface. After all that, I almost think it might have been quicker to start from scratch. But then I’d still have this Bachmann coach sitting on the parts shelf and you’d have no reason to laugh at me right now. Here’s a shot of the progress:

I think it is looking good especially with the windows cut out a bit. I like the idea of building a diner out of a old car. In my train yard I have a combine that serves as an office and besides paint and steps I didn’t do a thing to it. The other day I received a cool little pass car that I bought from TRAINZ with the intention of making it a diner so I will be watching your build with great interest.

LOL!

Nice start.

I like it. Coaches-turned-diner may be common but one that is well-done and shows some though put into it, is still interesting.

Everything looks better in color…

Looks good…

As one who has eaten at Mickey’s many times I whole-heartedly approve!!!

Kevin,

Looks great, nice work.

Nico

Nice. What are you plans for the entry way?

Thanks, everyone.

Bruce- I really like the look of Mickey’s, but I’m not really a big fan of the entrance door. I’m thinking about making mine rectangular with a long oval shaped window in the center. Perhaps some horizontal bars for a handle. Something a little more deco style. I’d like to flank each side of the door with some glass block to add to the deco feel.

Boy did I just have one of those eye opening “boy I feel stupid” moments!!! In my last post (to Bruce), I mentioned how I didn’t care for Mickey’s entrance door. I went on to describe a rectangular door with an oval window, blah, blah, blah… Well, as I was doing some more research on Mickey’s for my build I found some close up pictures of the entrance door. You’ll never guess what I saw. Yep. A rectangular door with an oval window… Talk about open mouth, insert foot!!! I guess the style of the vestibule threw of my perception of the entrance way. Anyway, I still don’t like the vestibule part of the entrance. As for their door… it’s exactly what I would have done! LOL.

-Kevin.

Well, at least we know where you got the inspiration for the door.

As for the vestibule, why not use the current color scheme that you have for the rest of the side. Something like this:

What Bruce is showing is what most of those old diners had for an entrance that I remember.

Bruce- that’s a much better looking vestibule than the Mickey’s one. I like the idea of adding a clock, as well. Thanks for the info.

When you shortened the roof, did you just cut a section out of the middle, or did you cut an inch or so out of each end?

Yute wants to know! And me too!

Kevin that looks really nice. I will follow this as I need to do something with an old Bachmann coach as well.

Dick- I cut a piece off of one end and then filled in one of the window openings in order to even things out. It’s not 100% perfect but the clerestory windows look fairly even. I also got rid of the chimney and filled that in too.

Jerry- Thanks. I hope to have some more done, soon.

Kevin…A photographer friend of mine was recenly shooting down-town, thought you’d like to see

Mickey’s in all her glory!

Now that would be great if you could put all the neon on it as well.

WOW Mark- thanks for posting that photo! Mickey’s does look awesome with all that neon- a real inspiration! It would be cool to model all that neon… HMMMM, it really gets me thinking…
