Check out the suppliers in O scale, I recall there being products that allow a fairly accurate recreation of the neon lighting effects, but they may by indoor only products.
You could try Glow wire http://www.glowire.com/signs.htm its a flexible wire in different colours and you can bend it to almost any shape

Miller Engineering is the company that Vic is talking about. Check out his web site, he does some amazing things. Take a look at the links on the left, especially “Experimenter-Kits” and “Flourescents.”
To my inexperienced eye, it looks as though these products could be massaged for outdoor use.
Some projects of his customers…

And, for the Trekies among us…
Well, Its been a few weeks since my last update on Lolly’s. The weather has warmed up quite a bit and I’ve been spending most of my free time working on a major 1:1 scale project in the yard, so progress on Lolly’s has slowed down as a result. I know, I know… I really should get my priorities straight- More time on the railroad!!! I have been getting some interior work done. Check it out…
A view of the front… Who’s that good looking guy out front… You guessed it- Its me.

I’m still pondering the neon sign for the roof. Thanks for all the suggestions and ideas.

Miller Engineering makes some really cool “neon” products. I use their products on my HO layout.
But I would not recommend these for outdoor use. Actually I would recommend against it. The flexible glow sheets can’t get wet or they short out and don’t work anymore. You can’t even use water based paint on them.
EXCELLENT!!!
Seriously neat stuff!
Looks good!
Thanks everyone!
-Kevin.
Looking good Kevin!
Someday i might build the diner my grandfather designed but never built. These are scans of his original plans that I still have…
Jon, that’s cool…
Wow, Jon- that is a cool diner! You should definitely build that one. My diner project has been put on temporary hold because of a major backyard project. I’m hoping to return to it soon, as all I’ve got left to do is the neon sign for the roof. All this backyard work has given me some time to think through the neon sign dilemma. I think I’ve got a plan. Details to follow, soon… I hope.

Kevin,
Nice job, It all looks awesome.
Nico
Thanks, Nico. I’m hoping to find time to finish, soon.
