Locomotive Haul - modded LGB

Pete,

only just picked up on this topic, that Mason Bogie looks very much like the one built by my friend Peter Janes round about 2000.

Peter was a prolific ‘maker’ of loco’s, always trying to make something ‘different’ from stock models. As you say this one was made from an LGB Mogul, Peter didn’t want to cut down the length of the original boiler or tender to make it more prototypical, it was very much a characature using what was already there, I think it worked out OK. Sadly Peter passed away in 2005.

The model was passed on to Garden Railway Specialists in exchange for more models for bashing shortly after it was finished and I caught up with it some years later when owned by Dave Buckingham. Dave passed away about ten years ago and I think it may well have gone back to GRS for resale at that time and I don’t know the history since.

Your right about the electrical set up, either track or battery power by changing the plugs, Pete was a firm believer in simple electrics and the Chimp was probably one of his first dabbles with electronics which he never really got to grips with!

I’m pleased to see the loco again after all these years and I’m sure you will get enjoyment from owning a unique model, hopefully the bit of history I have been able to give is of interest to you.

Allen, thanks for the info. I did get a note from David Fletcher, who organized the Mason Bogie Masterclass over on MLS that it had been written up in a magazine around 2006. I found it on Facebook being sold by the son of the last owner who had sadly passed too. [Based on the number of expired owners, I’m beginning to wonder about this locomotive.]

As you can tell from this thread, I am certainly enjoying it, although it is stored in my Florida home until the Fall.

The Garratt is now in Maryland where my pal has a RR with track power, so we were able to see if it would run. Sure did.

P.S. The high-pitched noise is not the loco - it’s the 17-year cicadas doing their thing in the trees.

Well, when the cicadas are quiet, I also notice both locomotives are quiet. Sound is definitely called for, though I wonder how to work the chuff on a garratt. Separate sensors on each power truck, triggering chuffs but not synced with the other power truck? Should sound like a 2-cylinder Shay, perhaps.

I usually fit the Mylocosound modules. Anyone got any better ideas?

Pete,

No ideas on the sound, but, wow, I bet that thing can pull with a pair of m2080 chassis serving as a power! It looks really cool, and I am glad the Garrett is in hands that can return a unique model to service!
