Loading Logs with Forney

Today I attempted to make a new video this time usingnthe RC in the Forney. Makes a big difference with RC although Im still lerning the controls. I wanted to do a lot more with the video but broke my camera. Guess it was not a bad thing sice the camera has not been taking very nice pictures anymore. Getting old.

Great vid Shawn and the Forney is putting out some great plumes.

Looks great Shawn, especially you can control it easier now!

Alec.

Shawn, nice video… Layout looks good, but where’s the snow???

Nice

Cool video, Shawn.
Sorry to hear about the camera.

Hmmmmmmmmmm, those logs look familiar…

Very nice video Shawn. Management loved getting that load of logs delivered at the mill.

Live steam is really sharp…I’ll have to get one of those some day.

Doc Tom

Tom, do it now while you are alive - you’re a long time dead.

tac

Sean,
Awesome video, Looks like you are enjoying the live steam.

I am thinking about a starter Ruby…then graduating to a steam powered Shay in the future. A fellow can dream. Doc Tom

Sorry to hear about the camera, Shawn.
Great vid.

From what I know (which is no a heck of a lot), the Shay is actually a better starter loco than the Ruby. Mine was easy to fire and easy to run right out of the box.

That is very interesting. What type/ brand of Shay do you have? I am definitely going to research this. Thanks for the idea. One of the reasons I got in to Large Scale modeling was to get a good running Shay…a real steam powered one would be really nice.
Doc Tom

I agree with Jon. I started with the two cylinder Shay from Accucraft. Very easy to work with, and does great on my layout with 4% grades.

I’ve got the same engine as Bruce and find it to be a great runner. It is manually operated and I have used it the last two years to switch one of the yards on the IPP&WRR during the American Invasion. Great, simple piece of equipment!

Mine is also an Accucraft 2-Cyl except I have the “Plantation” style wood burner…

Tom if you can afford it go with the Shay. Thats the engine I would have gotten if money was not an issue. The Forny runs great but will not do well on big grades. You will also have to add RC to the Forney or the Ruby 5 for it to work well on a layout with minor grades. The larger cyclinders helps only the Ruby 5 and Forney has it. The other Rubies do not from what I was told.

Hi Shawn , Jon, Bruce and Ric,

The Accucraft two and three cylinder Shays look really nice and the reviews point to them as “user friendly.” Here is a nice You Tube video on running the three cylinder model. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfsJGphS0bY It was a very interesting video and I learned a lot.

I agree the Shay is a very strong puller both as a live steam model and in real life.

It might take some time, but saving up for one of these beauties looks like the way to go.

Doc Tom

Doc,

I’ve never had a problem with my two cylinder Shay. I’ve heard and seen the frustration of the people with the three cylinder Shays because they have to be “timed” and don’t always stay that way. You now have as much knowledge as myself on this subject.

Please excuse me now as I must hide from the stones and other projectiles that will be hurled in my general direction.
