Large Scale Central

Lean- to

I have always loved doing outdoor activities: snowshoeing, cross country skiing, Mt biking, rock climbing and hiking. One thing I always liked but since having little ones I never really get the chance to do and that is backpacking and camping out (not car camping). Andy planted the seed in my head with his caboose gazeebo. I started work on it back in sept. It is in the back end of my property. The back part of my property is surrounded by preserved farmland and the front of my property is all State Park Lands. Its a slow process because everything has to be done by hand including carrying the lumber to the site. Its 12x10. I still have to put the rafters up frame the front overhang then it cover it. The front will be open but I plan on using a canvas tarp to cover up the front if want to.

Some views from the shelter

Reminds me of the lean-tos on the Appalachian Trail. Some in Bear country even had chain link fencing and a large gate across the front to ward off night time visitors while you were slumbering.

Great idea Shawn,

Looks like a great place any time of year. What’s the poison ivy like in that part of the World? What is “surrounded by preserved farmland”? That should be a great place to introduce the youngins to Mother Nature.

No poison ivy. The only spot we have poison ivy is along the wood line. I have 9 acres the first half is field and the back half is all wooded with a creek running through it. Preserved farmland is where the land owner puts into the deed that protects the farm. It can never be developed. Farmland in this area can be dairy, horse, maple syrup, forestry (logging) ect… Its not open to the public unless the landowners allows it.

Tom its just like the ones on the Appalachain trail. I actually have a lean to a mile up the road from me where the Appalachain tr. crosses. We have used that in the past but you never have it to yourself. Always a scout group ect… their.

That must be nice to have property large enough you can effectively “camp out” without ever really leaving home. Are you going to put a fireplace in it?, I recall some of those appalachian lean-to’s had full-on stone fireplaces? Seams like a steel fireplace might be a good addition if a stone one is too much.

Shawn,
That must be for when your wife kicks you out for buying more trains!

Nico

Shawn: I wish we could have that kinda set up here on the Left Coast, but no deal, not enought money for the Government Types! It looks like fun for you and the family.

I like the area for trains.

You must have one heck of a backpack to be able to carry a leanto around with you :) :) ;) But it does look good Shawn and should serve you well

Thanks guys
Vic someone gave me a small wood stove for inside. Like the ones you see in cabelas for the canvas tents. That should give some heat as long as you huddle by it. I also made a campfire pit in front of the shleter. The colder days Im working on it I have the campfire going. Its better then going to a campground ect… I can campout and not worry about someone else being next to me.
Nico Thats the other plan. If the wife kicks me out I have another place to go.
The hardest is carrying all the wood to the site. A lot of back and fourth.

Very Nice Shawn.

I put a campsite up on the back part of my land. Its nice to be able to go there and start a campfire and just roast marshmallows or something like that. Actually we dont camp there as much, but we do go back there and sit by the fire to relax a little bit.

I have a fire pit, but it’s only a “stone throw” from the house. Some years I use it quite a bit.
For a couple years when the electric rates were so high, I cut off the AC in the house and stayed outside, building a fire just about every night.
I thought it might get the kids out of the house a little more, but I was wrong

Women’s work!

I just want to know where it’s leaning to…

Or leaning against…

If you put 10 politicions next to it, 5 will argue its leaning to the right and oppose it, the other 5 will argue its leaning to the left and oppose it. Personally I'd just roast some marshmellows and make s'mores, but my wife would oppose that. ;)

I got the rafters up today and tomorrow hopefully I can start putting the roof up. I had the campfire nice and hot today while working. Temps was 20 degrees but the fire kept me toasty. Pics tomorrow.

WE WANT PICS NOW! (with metal hurricane ties on them rafters considering the weather you get up on your mountain) ;) P.S......Most of us already know the only reason your making this Lean Too is so you can tend too your shine operation up there!

I spent a few more hours this morning working on the lean to. I got the plywood up on the roof. Next week I have to pick up the metal for the roof. Then start faceing the sides and back. The last thing will be putting the front overhang up. This will be it until Im off next week.

This is what keeps me warm while working.

Once the lean-to is done need to replace the bridge that was washed out from all the heavy rains.

For now I put some stepping stones in the creek that way we have a way to get over as long as its running at normal level.

Also along the path to the lean-to I have a few wet areas that will need some boardwalk to get across. This is one that I built 8 years ago using whatever had around. Its seen better days.

Starting to shape up nicely Shawn. Nice to have a little ‘get-away’ in the back ‘40’. And a creek to fish in and play in too. But you know when your kids get a little older they will take it over for their own. I know I liked that sort of thing when I was growing up. We built Forts and fished in the creek behind our house (also cooked the little trout over a fire). Memories. Thanks for sharing Shawn.

I guess the ultimate would be to have a train running from the creek to the leanto, hauling your catch back up to the shack…
