KVRwy aquires an HLW Dunkirk

At the East Coast Large Scale Train Show, a new geared engine was purchased for the boys in the shop to mess with. This is what it looks like out of the box.

And here are a couple of examples of what it can look like.

[ Discount the one example is derailed, its still a good looking engine  ] The disection has begun.

Doesn’t this look like the boiler and cab are supported on a steel plate attached to the wood lateral frames?

I really like Brian’s work, also.

I like that prototype with steel deck Ric. It will make a neat conversion

Pretty fancy loco. Look at the boiler jacket and domes. Two-tone paint job on the cab. Ralph

Early engine, which seems like most of the Dunkirk/Gilbert’s. Check out the headlamp. That big lamp has got to go.

Izit done yet?

Then once it is detailed and weathered it looks like this

I cant wait to see what you come up Ric. Eventually I want to take the side rods off and replace with something more protypical to the Dunkirk. Prob go with what I have on my Class A Climax. I agree about the big headlamp. I replaced mine and added one to the back. although It is not hooked up yet.

Steve, It isn't even started. Still unpacking and getting life back to normal.

Well, Friday night is open, since the "Ops" session is cancelled.... :)

None of my business…but,
I think it would look better if you get rid of the flatcar stake pokets and fasten a strip of brass with tiny fake bolts on the deck sides.
Like the pic.

I agree, the hungry boards are already gone. But I was thinking of a one board kick panel, thought I'd make it up and see how it looks before I cut the pockets off. We'll see as it comes along. Thanks for the thought.

I thought I’d recognized that photo! That’s a local shot! J.W. Blaisdell #2 shot taken in Bradford, PA. Just 20 minutes from where I sit is where that beauty ran. Of course it was only built an hour or so away so… Some inspriation of my own to do one of these coversions someday. I’ve got the Dunkirk book in my library someplace too. Can’t wait to see what you come up with Bob! Chas Also this one might come a “little bit” closer to the HLW Big John.

Chas,

Another good picture, thank you. My thoughts are to bring it up to operating status in the 1930’s or 40’s and restored back to that time period by a small operating museum.

OK, what are “hungry boards,” and why are they called that?

“Hungry Boards” are (usually wooden) extensions to the coal bunker, to allow more coal to be hauled, for those “hungry” locomotives.

That’s what I thought, but I didn’t see any on the HLW model.

Confused, I am.

I don’t understand the prototype? I see the side truck frames so how are the wheels driven? Gearing?

I do believe that’s why they’re referred to as “geared locomotives” Ralph
