Hi Tim.
The fuel tank is a hollow box, it only has sides, no top or bottom, so there is acces to all areas inside the loco. She has bulkheads at the front and back of the tank that go right up to the roof to give great structural support.
As for fitting stuff inside, you could almost get a car battery in there, she is a bit of a monster!!!
Cheers
Rob
Hi guy’s. just to let you know that I haven’t dropped off the face of the earth with this Krauss Maffei project, I have just been so busy getting other projects done that this one goit pushed to the back of the que! I still am not able to post pictures without the help of a “grown up” so I have emailed my regular helper to post the progress shots up here. She is going well now and is back in primer to see the last small bits that need filler attention, next is the addition of sme more detail parts including engine room roof hatches and exhausts, vents, rear lights, handrail bases, sandbox covers, bolt and rivet head detail (1000’s) cab rear windows cut out. plus thickening out the inside of the body to be around 1/4 inch for moulding.
Cheers guy’s
Rob

Please try again.
Seems like if you’re not used to seeing a particular locomotive, they appear to be ugly. For those of us that saw these locomotives regularly, yes, they were different, but over still an interesting subject all the same. The D&RGW units DID end up on the SP, as I saw them in Roseville all the time. Many of the mechanics (German) that came over to work on them, still are in the area.
Here are a couple pics of the modification to camera car.
In case members are wondering where the original photos I posted are: they’re gone.
I take photos down after a few months to save space in the freight shed.
Sorry, they are also gone from my computer.
John - I understand your reasons for doing so, but it annoys me when old posts lack their pictures. Kind of kills the value of the forum as a research tool.
I have more space than I could ever use, so I never delete anything. If you would like to send Rob’s photos to me, I’ll post them back here and they won’t go away. If Ron will re-send the early stuff, I’ll do the same with them.
Jon,
It’s been about seven months since Rob sent me anything. I figured he’d lost interest or something, so I delete the pics. I’m not known as a sentimentalist.

Buddy of mine was a engineer on the SP, he sent me some info on it a few weeks back, I posted it on MLS, I think, got NO reaction to it at all. Big thing!
Jerry; you should know by now that this is the place to post serious stuff, like reports on the performance of real Railroad Equipment.
I would very much enjoy seeing what you friend from SP had to say.
Fred,
I don’t have it anymore, I’ll drop him a line, or he may post on here, I sent him this post.
Yeah, please try and find it buddy, some of us hooked on these old girls and info is a little thin on the ground!! I made contact with a guy that worked for Krauss Maffei and was in charge of these when they were shipped over here. He has about an hour of wonderfull color footage of them being tested in Germany, shipped and tested in the States, from all sorts of priveledged view points ect. He is going to get it all put onto DVD.
As for the model, I had a good couple of sessions in the workshop since those last shots and now she is going very well indeed. My work as a train driver stops me from putting the hours in and also getting some nice daylight shots of her, but I should be able to get some more by the weekend.
Cheers
Rob
Here’s that info from my buddy engineer:
Folks,
There’s a new page on the Pacific Locomotive Association’ s SP 9010 restoration website. It’s devoted to models of the USA Krauss-Maffei diesel-hydraulics in all scales:
http://sp9010.ncry.org/models.htmhttp://sp9010. ncry.org/ models.htm
It highlights commercial models through the years, and spotlights some fine modeling by individuals, from Mike Danneman’s stunning scratchbuilt N scale Rio Grande ‘Prototypes’ , Clyde King’s extensive rework of a pair of HO scale Rivarossi models, and a remarkable 1:29 scale SP unit under construction in the UK, to a hefty 1:20 scale builder’s model of the SP ‘Series’ unit commissioned by Krauss-Maffei.
There’s also a page devoted to every last little detail of the KM ‘Series’ (hood) units, tracking every visible change on all 15 units through their short four year service lives. This is a serious resource for modelers of these hard-to-research locomotives:
http://sp9010.ncry.org/changes.htmhttp://sp9010. ncry.org/ changes.htm
For those who might not know this already, the PLA is restoring the only remaining USA ML 4000 C’C’, SP 9010 at their Brightside facility in Niles Canyon, California. The website is a gold mine of recollections, rare photographs, detailed histories, and some surprises – as well as a weekly chronicle of the restoration efforts:
http://sp9010.ncry.org/index.htmhttp://sp9010. ncry.org/ index.htm
New information appears regularly, and the PLA is fortunate to have a number of the original KM service and engineering team from Germany participating in the history and restoration projects.
These troubled beasts really got under people’s skins, and the story is fascinating to this day. Enjoy the fine modeling, check out the quality of the SP 9010 restoration efforts, and learn more KM trivia than you ever thought possible!
These are the guy’s (above) that I have hooked up with, they really are the best bunch ever and the quality of the work on constructing her missing nose has to be seen to be believed. I have been trying to help out with information on the Maybach motor’s and to identify some of the stuff inside her which has been wrecked, altered or stolen.
Cheers
Rob
Just google SP9010
Rob sent me the original pictures that were posted in this thread. They need to be re-sized before posting here, but you can view them individually by clicking here: http://lsc.cvsry.com/RobFern/ and then just click on each title to view full size.
John - If you would be so kind as to edit your original post, I’ll re size these for posting and send you the permanent links.

Thanks guy’s for sorting that all out, very much apreciated. I have had a great day on the model as I managed to get away from work very early and was “in the mood” for some model making!!!
Lots and lots done on it, so the pictures I take over the weekend should show some significant progress.
Thanks
Rob
