Anybody delve in to these, yet? Looks like more, new technology. I hadn’t heard of it until this morning, living here on the trailing edge of the information byway.

Terry,
I had to google it. It some type of electric book that will even read to you. My knowledge is one hour older than yours.
I really want one of those, but I’m waiting till the whole e-book thing stabilizes and settles on formats
Books are kind of a curse for me–I constantly am getting new books, for my job, and also I like to read for pleasure. We’re just running out of physical space. I recently moved a whole lot of books to my office–I had to build a bunch of new shelves and find “clever” ways to cram them in.
The Kindle holds 1500 books or so, and it looks like paper. It’s not a backlit screen, so there’s no eye strain and the battery drain is extremely low. It looks like reading on paper and it’s about the size of a large paperback. You can mark a page, and notes to yourself, or search the text. I know some people who have one and rave about it.
The other big advantage is that you can buy books from anywhere–it uses cellphone technology so if you’re at the beach, and you finish a book and want another, you can just call up a new one and it’s downloaded to the kindle in a minute. If you are a reader, and you go on a trip, you often pack a bunch of books. With the Kindle, you just pack the kindle. Books you buy for the Kindle are cheaper by a third to a half
Downsides are it’s expensive, not all the books I would need are available, it’s more fragile than a book and of course if it blows, there goes your library of 1500 books
Sooner or later these (if not the Kindle, something like it) will replace books, no doubt in my mind

I’d love to have one, I’m a book nut…but I think this will be purchased first: http://hunting.about.com/od/guns/l/aasttaurpt145_2.htm
If it holds 10 rounds in the clip…it is double stacked and will make for a very thick grip.
A Colt Officers Model 45ACP is small enough to fit in a “fanny” pack with great balance and control.
Ralph
You got that right Ralph. Double stack .45’s are too big for my hands. I love my Sig Sauer P220, but it’s not a fanny pack gun. That’s OK by me. I’m not a fanny pack guy.
I may not live long enough to transition from hardbacks to electronic. Any good train books in “e”?

I’m not a fanny pack guy either…just a size comparison. I have an under arm concealment rig that works just fine.
Ralph
they have a 6+1 single stack…sorry Ric, didn’t mean to draw fire away from your topic!
cale
that is neat.
Thanks Ric.
Back in 1999 Carla bought me a “Palm” for Christmas…for work…I proceeded to load in the Old and New Testament…the following Sunday am, the Pastor asked us to “turn in our Bibles to Acts 13”…so I reached into my coat pocket and pulled out the Palm…Carla noticed what I was doing and I got a ribcage full of her elbow, not to mention the scowl from the depths of below…needless to say, the Palm went up and never darkened the door of a church again!
A client of ours loves her Kindle (first gen) and gifted her friends one at Christmas, she raves about it each time she is in. It does make for a neat little ditty…

I love my Sig 226 (.40) …I’t won’t fit in my fanny pack but probably in my mother in laws.
I will more than likely live long enough to see the transition but will fight the technology as long as I possibly can. Just can’t imagine ditching my books and reading a Kindle while on the can. Besides if you hang up the books you hang up the Crayons as well?
I love Crayons!
My Browning Hi-Power only holds 16 rounds, but if I know there’s going to be trouble, I’ll stay home.
Lately this place seems more a right wing forum than a serious train site. Freedom of speech is a fine thing, so is freedom of association. Can’t even discuss a book thread without bringing up a “my gun’s bigger than yours” series of posts. It was a fun place…no big loss to the membership to be sure, but I don’t want to associate here anymore.
I too am guilty by the way…should have spent more time in train related sections to help build the forum. Different tastes for all of us eh? Summers coming, time to plan that first outdoor layout…wonder if there’s any good “e” books on outdoor model railroads?
Later…

Sorry Mark.
I did not realize that responding to Cale, my friend, would offend anyone.
As for spending more time building the train forum…it is never too late.
Ralph
Lots of Good Books Mark, check Amazon!
have fun!

I’d like one of these myself. But, it looks like the book prices just aren’t that cheap. On their page, they compare the price to a hardback, but it’s still more than the average paperback, which I generally prefer.
One thing I wouldn’t like is that I lose the ability to pass on a book to a friend. Or, get one from them.
I sure do like the space savings.
So, anyone here have one yet?
BTW, the first link was for the “old” Kindle. Here is Kindle 2: http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Amazons-Wireless-Reading-Generation/dp/B00154JDAI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1235941484&sr=1-1
Wow,
I can buy a laptop for the same price as the Kindle ll.
The book price should be cheaper than a soft cover.
Too pricey for me.
Ralph
I think a lot of folks agree with you Ralph. The initial price is rather high at $360. There are a number of books you CAN get for under a buck, but you’d think new releases would be cheaper than $10.
I like the idea, but it’s a bit steep for someone no longer working.
