Kid-zilla vs. Bachmann...A Story of Dad Learning to Let Go

Box em up and send them

He’s got all my junk boxes. Shipping to Hawai’i isn’t that bad if you use Pirateship and USPS.

Shame on you two elders!

Why don’t you just ship him some pocket change and dark green cutting torch glasses so he can stand in line waiting for breakfast with his glasses on while rattling his pocket change talking about the price of gas during the Regan years!

I bet neither one of you has ever argued about who’s paying for breakfast either!

Who give a rats behind what it cost to ship …

Consider it helping to pay for an education that is priceless which only the University of LSCental can teach him!

UPdate:

@PeterT 's chassis arrived on Thursday on Friday. Guess what? In addition to piston things and bottom-plate mounted buses, B’mann had side-mounted busses to carry electricity from the wheels to the motor!

Who knew? Bushings, no bushings, pistons, buses, combinations…bottom line, if Kid-zilla ever goes into business refurbishing derelict B’mann 10-wheelers, he’s seen it all! Back to this project, OCU-Bumblebee had these side-mounted buses; Pete’s chassis had bottom plate mounted buses. It was time to hedge our bets…

You may remember from an earlier post that the starboard forward driver kept coming off. Sure enough, the plastic insert was worn, and the ridged axle would no longer ā€œbite.ā€ Kid-zilla and I ransacked the bits box. He found a driver that would work; I found the buses and bottom plate to put Pete’s chassis into service. PCU-Bumblebee looks like this:

The fixed work. While Kid-zilla is not thrilled with the looks, the rest of us find it sort of whimsically charming. Pete’s chassis, meanwhile, is in reserve against future need.

Kid-zilla also gave PCU-Bumblebee his number, applying a vinyl ā€œ9ā€ to each side of the cab (thanks for those numbers @Rooster !).

Again, overall, it looks sharp. I was dubious about the color scheme, but I really can’t wait to see her in service!

It took multiple sixes and nines, but we also got some black dry transfers on the lamp which we sealed behind clear gloss.

Unfortunately, running tests were a bit rough. My homemade pilot tends to come off the rails, so more tire trim weights are in order. Also, PCU-Bumblebee stalls on turnouts, so I suspect I have to putter with those buses to ensure contact with the drivers.

Al-most-there…

Those pilots are very long, and have no flexibility - and thus don’t pick up power if the track isn’t perfectly level. If you are still using the metal strips and pickups, then loosen the strips [they are what hold the axles/wheels in place anyway.]

(I thought there was a pic.) What I do is to remove the nylon spacers so the whole thing gets floppy. Then put something down the center to insulate the two sides - tape or styrene work fine.
