Large Scale Central

Kaskaskia Valley Railway 9th Annual Fall OPs

With that many trains running I bet Andy was having a good time as Yard Boss. Did everyone make it out alive

Noah (the pyromaniac) kept the fire pit a smokin’ and we had a grand time! Southern was quite crowded in the beginning and lots of new people came as well. Should I make that 1.5 hour drive again today??? you bet! see ya guys soon!
I was in a holding pattern most of the time at Consolidated (YARD boss MIA again?) lol I knew better than to proceed without EXACT direction from the YARD BOSS! lol

Looking forward to some pictures. I know Ric is usually too busy to cary a camera around, but I’m hopeful someone got a few shots

Dear Ric,

Any invaders?

Joe,

There was only one questionable citizenship, but Doug Matheson made it through Customs with only minimal invasion of his personal space and that was good enough for us.

Just now getting back online to posting. Sorry for the delays. Sunday’s run ended up with 30 Trains, carrying 130 cars and 12,000 tons of people and cargo. We ran more trains this year in a day than we have tried to achieve in a weekend. The goal is 18 in a day. Plans are not to increase the anticipation of what will be done, but we certainly had fun. Jane, the Dispatcher and her assistant, Bart, did a stellar job and even instituted a ā€œCrew Call Listā€ to keep the number of trains on the line to a manageable amount of 6 on the mainline at one time.

Dear Ric,

Glad that Doug could make the long trip to represent the GWN. Sounds like you all had a great time.

Thanks to you and Jan for hosting and all your hard work. Andy and Jane too.

Thanks for the nice pics, Robbie and Andy.

I’ll try to make it down next year…perhaps a little more and a little earlier sweet talkin’ to my better half will do the trick…

Sincerely,

Joe Satnik

We arrived at Andy and Jane’s a bit before noon on Friday. It was very windy and not all that warm - except for the hospitality! Jane and Andy have done a lot of work since we were first there in 2008, even though Andy took some time off last fall. It really does look nice. I couldn’t resist taking a shot of these three cars coming out of the basement window.

Bart got a chance to run his large locomotives.

Bob Temper and Doug Matheson brave the cold wind down near Woodlawn Junction.

Meanwhile, Andy’s long train snakes through the valley.

The sheer size of the layout makes my motorcar seem very tiny.

My passenger car looks very nice running on this large layout.

Thanks to Andy and Jane for creating a delightful Friday!

Saturday brought us over to Ric & Jan’s. I guess this is the ā€œofficialā€ start of the great weekend. As always, Jan had more than enough food for all the visitors. We’ve only been there three times, but this sure seemed like the largest crowd ever. It was really great talking with all the visitors and running trains. Jean and I started by running a sweeper train- it put out a few cars and picked a few up, but our main job was cleaning the switches and making sure that everything was OK for the rest of the day.

Of course we were so busy after that I failed to take my normal quota of pictures. Between operating trains and socializing, I just about completely forgot to take pictures. I did take some pictures of the final run of Saturday. It wasn’t very light out.

Jane was the dispatcher that day and finally got a chance to relax by the fire.

Saturday night we all stayed in and enjoyed some pizza - giving us more time to talk. (And time to forget taking pictures!) :frowning: We operated again on Sunday. Once again, some great weather and more fun trains to operate. Ric and Denny in Southern, on Sunday afternoon (approximately 5:31 CST).

What a great time! Thanks to Ric & Jan for hosting this wonderful event. They did an outstanding job of making everyone feel welcome.

And thank you for the pics Bruce. Looks like a good time was had by those in attendance.
Glad to hear you have such a busy Railroad Ric,Sounded like this past weekend will keep the railroad in the black for another year

All I can say is WOW. We’ve been watching Andy’s railroad grow for a while now, but I don’t think I have grasped the sheer size of it until now. Seeing that long covered hopper train, and the rail-car under the bridge really gives it perspective. Great pictures Bruce.

That’s also the first time i think we have seen pictures of Ric’s fire pit. Looks like a nice place to hang out and enjoy some conversation and beverages
