John Passaro Build 2017

Good looking rock there John.

Thanks, gentlemen. I really appreciate the encouragement a lot. To be honest with you, tonight I was working some more and I think I’m starting to get the hang of this rock/stone/brick thing. Yipee!

I’ll post more pictures tomorrow or the next day.

I need help with roofing, like seriously. I’m thinking ahead and I don’t have enough plastic material on hand to make a roof this size for my engine house. How do I make roofing? There’s no way in hell I’m cutting individual pieces of roofing shakes/shingles.

I could buy these:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/JTT-SCENERY-97438-SCALLOPED-EDGE-TILE-1-48-O-SCALE-2-7-5-x-12-SHEETS-JTT97438/121655722881?_trksid=p2045573.c100033.m2042&_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20131017132637%26meid%3D9a9fffaf05824bb5b491ba8803ade85b%26pid%3D100033%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D8%26sd%3D390987165030

which are 1:48 about .23 inches wide, or these, which are twice that in width:

But I really don’t want to spend the money, because it would get me close to $30 and I would rather spend nothing, which is what I have spent so far, as in zero beyond what I have on hand.

Has anyone got any ideas for relatively easy scratch-built 1:24 shingle-style roofing? All suggestions are more than welcome.

You could do a “shake” roof just using a piece of roofing paper, or maybe posterboard/cardboard/etc. if not to be used outside.

If you are really ambitious, you can lay a piece down as a basis then take another piece and using a tin snips or … cut the shingles into the paper and lay that on the base piece.

What about using sand paper cut into strips then cut three tab shingles into them.

Or jsut in layers as rolled roofing.

Or beer cans and paper crimper (I was going to do this on the snow shed and made some. Its not Taylor tin but came out great).

Or doll house shakes

Korm has done thatching with hemp rope I believe.

Thatching with Hemp rope? Now there’s a lifetime project for you!

nope.

each row layed in about five minutes. layed two or three rows, then let it dry for about three hours, before putting more layers.

When you’re thatching with hemp, time passes like…

Wait…, what was the subject again?

Does anybody have an easy and quick way of making roof tile/shakes/tabs/anything that’s believable? With the emphasis on QUICK because there are only two weekends left.

Wait a minute, I think that was the subject…

p.s. my railroad fire insurance company will not allow a thatched roof.

Wet or dry sand papers can make a believable tar paper roof. Use gloss black for tar to seal the seams… Cut to size …

Yes

Rooster always helpful, lol.

Now Devon, in Rooster’s defense, he did answer the question that was asked (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif). Oh no! I’ve stooped to defending a rooster, please forgive me, LOL.

Thank you, Rooster. I see the light now.

I’ll remember John’s method for my next flat roof. I think I’ll try Todd and Devon’s roll and cut tabs method and see if it’s doable in the allotted time. Otherwise, I’ll try to find plastic sheets to match the ones I have and keep the cost down that way.

John, Indoor, or outdoor, for the final location. If Indoor, or out door under cover, Try wacking up some mat board into standard height but very the width for shake shingles, Glue down a bit random, Seal with TB III, Paint with base and Dry brush… $ Free…

Well, Dave, thanks to all the suggestions for your roof in your build, I found thanks to John C. standing seam copper roofing, which I have plenty of in styrene without knowing what it was. So standing copper it is!

Now all I have to do is get the engine house to where it needs a roof in the first place. How much time did you say we have left?

That’s what I tried to tell you to begin with but you didn’t want to listen because you wanted “shingles”

That standing seam copper is great. I learned how to patina copper and it would be fun to make this out of real copper and age it. If done in brass you could get that nice green color with commercial patina. But if not going that route and you have the styrene how are you gonna get that aged look? I know they make copper foil at Michael’s. Its adhesive back I found it in the Cricut supplies.

Rooster…I love that tower of yours, but you got to understand: I hear pictures.

Devon…why, paint of course!
