Large Scale Central

It Happens Every Year

I have a rather large yard, that is adjacent to a cemetary with quote/unquote perpetual care (That means someone mows the grass every so often…)

So every year…without fail someone pulls up in a big shiney SUV with out of state tags, parks in my yard, and goes to into the cemetary…and I always happen to be mowing my grass at the time (this usually happens over Memorial Day Weekend, but came early this year). And then it a happens, a woman (its always a woman for some reason) hair done, nails, makeup put on with a can of Krylon wants to stop me from what I’m doing and complain vocally (sometimes profanely) and make threats about how I’d better get over there and cut that grass or clean the cut grass off a specified memorial, or pick up the trash, or haul off the flowers from last year etc…

It usually ends up with me sometimes tersly depending on the mood I’m in pointing out the sign that is on the gate with the name address and contact info of the guy who is responsible for taking care of the cemetary…and no you can’t use my phone to call him (ya got a $40k SUV yer telling me you don;t have a cell phone???) Then I point out she is tresspassing…and that I’m about to mow the grass that is right where she is parked…and I hope her windows are rolled up…have a nice day…

Umm call the local police…sure go right ahead…I will gladly call them for you …I have the guys home number…this is a small town after all…and I’m betting I know him better than you do…

We call them cityits (City idiots)

Well, judging from what I saw of the participants in youse guys Halloween parade, I don’t doubt you for a minute, Bart…

Funny story Bart people can be nuts when it comes to “the rules applying to them”

My uncle lives on a lake and has a lot that is open with a beach etc… which happens to be next to the public landing. Despite at least 3 NO TRESPASSING signs pointed toward the landing the amount of people that come on his property and leave trash, damage trees, and give him grief is never ending. He has a big black lab and one day the dog charged down to the beach area and did his business, my uncle comes along behind and some guy with family on the landing side flipped out on him and demanded that he put the dog on a leash and he clean up the poop because his kids were playing on the beach. My uncle pointed out the private property signs and the guy actually said “that doesn’t mean anything to me” The poop stayed.

People really fly off the handle when they are challenged on something like no trespassing.

If it were me or my uncle and tha lady parked on my land we would continue cutting the grass and let the clippings fly where they may.

I’m still partial to “To hell with the dog, beware of owner!” signs. That or “DANGER, guard (insert animal here): Trespassers will be eaten!”

My favorite is “This property guarded by Smith and Wesson three days a week. You guess which three.”

I’m partial to the sign that has a picture of a fierce looking German shepherd and reads, “I can make it to the gate in 3 seconds, can you?”

I own a retail shop and I can guarantee you that no matter how BIG the sign or how many signs, people refuse to READ.

I once gave a friend a sign that said,

NO TRESPASSING

survivors will be prosecuted

Cityots?, thats a new one LOL

Best thing you can do is build a small fence at your property line, with a simple sign that says “cemetery” with a friendly arrow pointing the way to the cemeteries parking lot. You could then add this sign next to the driveway:

and if that doesnt work:

One more idea, I think I can absolutely guarentee that if you post this, NO ONE will park near you:

I like the one that reads… “if you can read this, your in range”…Id take and chain my dog where he can almost reach the drivers door and then go inside for a while

Like John stated 'no matter how many signs, no one reads them. I live in a resort area and because of the lake shoreline, my trains are in my side yard. I have had more than one person come to the door and DEMAND I start the trains up for their kids or grand kids. They step over the fence and pick up running trains, people and I have even had one woman let her dog shit on my tracks while I was standing there. Calling her attention to it she replied this was the “country where it is expected dogs run free”. I have more than one sign stating it is a private train, and “You break it you own it.” They are just clutter.

…where dogs runs free…

Whip out the S&W and state, I need some meat for the table. That will do nicely!!!

Tom,

Years ago I had a neighbor (in New Jersey) whose dog liked my front yard better than any other location in the neighborhood. As soon as I found out who owned the dog, I started picking his ‘business’ up and putting on the owners front porch. It didn’t take long for the message to be had. It was soon after I watched him ‘walk’ his dog on a leash and carried a bag and a ‘pooper scooper’.

Sometimes the subtle message woks best. Maybe you should have quietly picked up her dogs stuff and put it in the front seat of her car.

I’m fortunate that my house is relatively private and my railway is behind the house. Behind us is a sheep farm and the sheep don’t seem to mind the trains. I simpathsize with some of you that live closer to where the public can invade your privacy. Reading some of the posts above I’m surprised that I haven’t read about any fist fights.

Speaking of dogs, I watched as a woman let her dog do its business in the Ivy that covers the slope of my neighbors property. I guess she figured if it can’t be seen it isn’t there…

I’m 65 and old enough to remember when dogs were allowed to dump on the grass strip between the sidewalk and street. Most of the time they hit the grass. Growing up in the city I learned to look before I stepped out of my car. That was normal practice in those days and no one thought anything of it. Occasionally we had horse drawn wagons on our street and the horses would do their thing on the blacktop. While the portions were larger than dogs, they were not as nasty.

Bart,

Saw the title of your posting here and immediately thought, My GOD he’s torn up his railroad and is starting over again. Which seemed to be your normal spring ritual for many years.

Glad to hear it is only trouble with quiet neighbors and their relatives. Post no trespassing signs, get a big dog and call police every time somebody steps on your property. Spitting chewing tobacco at their feet usually keeps them back.

As far as dogs doing their business on your property makes me have to tell the story of my 96 year old Father in Law, again. Around 30 years ago, he lived in a nice suburban neighborhood of St. Louis County. He had a neighborhood dog walker constantly letting her dog do his business in my Father in Law’s front yard. FOL goes out and greets the offender one morning, picks up the results with his bare hand and threw it at the offender and the dog, stating they needed to take the results with them. Cops were called and FOL was told his action were improper by a laughing policeman. Dog walking neighbor didn’t go down that block again. Yep, 96 and still stubborn enough to cause frustration at his assisted living location.

“Dog walking neighbor didn’t go down that block again.”

Your father-in-law may have taken the Big Stick approach, but he got results.

A few years ago I had a neighbor move in who had a couple of medium size dogs. In previous years there had been a few dogs disappear so I thought I would be nice and warn him to keep his dogs close. He then put up a fence to keep them in and everything was fine for a while. Then I started finding piles on my lawn on a regular basis so I soon discovered that he was leaving the gates on his yard open and letting the dogs out early before he went to work. Guess he got tired of cleaning up his yard. Some one told me to let them pile up for a few days and then to pour bacon grease on them. Next morning I go to check and all the ones that I put grease on were gone. Apparantely it makes the dogs think that this is something to eat. It doesn’t hurt them but does make them lose control of their bowel. So, the neighbor put the dogs in the house and went off to work as usual. When he came home, the dogs had lost control and the house had piles and trails all over. I could hear him screaming at the dogs and could not help but laugh. Probably took a long time to clean that up. Bottom line, after that he always made sure the gates were closed when the dogs were out. End of problem.

Great story Ron, I worked for a guy years ago who told a story about a dog in his neighborhood that came around every day marking his territory. At my friend’s house, the dog always squirted the same basement window. He asked the owner numerous times to control his dog but of course the dog kept on showing up every morning. So Harry rigged up an ignition coil, an oscillator and a 12 volt battery. He connected one terminal to the aluminum screen in the window and the other to a large piece of screen that he laid on the ground in front of the window. Next day Bowser came around and lifted his leg and let loose as usual - only this time the stream completed the circuit between the screens. Neighbors ten houses down claimed they had heard the dog yelping that morning and running around like he’d been stung by a bee or something but that was the last time Harry saw that dog anywhere near his house.

Some problems require extreme solutions.
