Large Scale Central

IoM 'Sea Lion' locomotive

in live-steam 7/8th scale is now on offer from Accucraft UK. It will also be on sale for around $1500 in the US of A, from the usual source [afternoon, Jason].

However, would somebody please advise Mr Scott over on the other site that the Isle of Man is NOT part of the United Kingdom, but is, in fact, far older in terms of self-governing than the UK.

Accucraft UK and a some acquaintances of mine over on the IoM have gone to immense trouble to get the complex lining of this lovely little loco right at a reasonable price, and, IMO, have succeeded admirably. However, Mr Scott has this to say -

‘A little paint remover and some cosmetics and there might be possibilities for a more US outline loco.’

Since there was only ever ONE such locomotive, it seems odd to ask for it in black, as it never appeared in black. As such, my suggestion to Mr Scott - who would like to remove some of the unique and hard-to-reproduce lining and lettering, is to get out the black spray can. It is, even in 7/8th scale, a minute loco, and makes Ward Kimble’s little Forney look like a Challenger.

Thanks.

Ahhh, the horror of the thought, Terry…the utter disrespect shown to a classic…will these “People” over at “The other place” ever learn about RESPECT…

…heck they don’t even respect themselves enough to use their own names on their prized web page. How would you or anyone else expect them to respect a classic Isle of Man locomotive, let alone know anything about The Isle of Man…

Fred.

Goodness, She is a small thing. I can see that looking very at home chugging around in some gardens. I’ll be looking for it in future photos and vids.

Can you say “Quirky”, I think you can!(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

It is a real gem of a model. My BIL and I saw it for the first time at the Llanfair show last September. It is actually a good deal smaller than MOST 16mm scale locos.

It really IS that small…

I have to interject that I can’t see the point of a 7/8n2 scale loco that is smaller than a 16mm:ft loco. To me, the whole point is to have BIG locos ! The Fairymead was the same - it was wide and tall so the driver had somewhere to stand, but the boiler is tiny.

Give me a Maine 2-ft Forney in 7/8n2 any time. [Hello, Jason?]

Yeah, well, it’s a good job for the hobby that we are not all totally taken with having large models of little trains. Sometimes, when the prototype is small to start with, like this one is, there are a goodly number of people who would like to model it precisely because it IS kinda cute and unusual.

Me, Id LOVE to have a 7/8th scale three-foot Heisler or Shay, but instead, I have to make do with my 1/4 scale Ffestiniog Railway switcher…

tac,

is that ig in the cab riding along with you?

…the one and only…!!!

Yuppers. He’s really the driver - he lets me sit up top and pretend with a fake controller. He’s pretty thoughtful like that, him.

Holy Moley - TAC is posting pictures!!! Nice job Terry. And I like that little IOM engine too.

Jon and all - I can re-post images that are already ON the internet, but otherwise…:frowning:

PS - Fred, get the pie ready!

I guess I may be missing the thrust of this thread.

So is the “other site” MLS?

I want to go over there as TAC’s emissary and thoroughly chastise him, but I need to be fully prepared with the facts.

Thanks, Greg

You mean there’s another forum apart from MLS and us?

Greg, much as I support and applaud your sentiments, be advised, if you didn’t already know, that the gentleman concerned will ignore you and your advice/information, in exactly the same way he did to me and many others like me on that forum for the last few years.

For what it’s worth, the Isle of Man has its own parliament, called The Tynwald, that pre-dates the English parliament by a couple of hundred years. It is claimed to be the oldest continuous parliamentary body in the world, consisting of two Houses: the directly elected House of Keys and the indirectly chosen Legislative Council. It has own currency, its own tax-levying laws [a great tax haven for the rich], its own vehicle licensing authority, gun laws and excise licensing laws. It is a self-governing Crown Dependency, like Gibraltar, or, in US terms, any of your Caribbean ‘possessions’.

Was just curious TAC, and I haven’t had a good altercation in a while ha ha!

Can I just order a can of black spray paint and have it delivered to this guy? (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

Greg

I’m told that it takes a skilled worker a whole working day to paint the fine lining and livery on this little gem, and he wants to spray it black, put a cow-catcher on it and make it look more American. The whole point about this model is that it doesn’t look like ANYTHING American. Even Ward Kimble’s little Forney would dwarf it.

I just think it’s sad, that’s all.

Stupid might be a better word than sad, but I don’t know the complete back story…

So I’m sending a can of black spray paint AND a cow catcher? (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Greg

Chinese wispers - Chris never said on the other site he wanted to Americanise it, rather just asked if there could be a plain unlined black version as well. One thing I’ve learned developing locomotives for that company is that what ever liveries you come up with, always offer the black one too.

Personally, I love the lined ones in colour! I’ve had my Sea Lion on order from the store at IOM for a year already. Looking forward to it.

David.

David - we both know that there never was a black version of this loco, so why ask for something totally unoriginal?

Me, I’d like a Pennsy K4 in LMS crimson lake, simply because I think it would look spiffy…that, too, is never going to happen.

The can of black spray-paint, on the other claw, is the easy way out of the dilemma.

tac

Ottawa Valley GRS

to be fair TAC, a Pennsy K4 in all black… or any other steam loco in all black would be the analogy… a better analogy would be a loco that never came in black.

I really don’t see it as the massive travesty, although it does seem a waste of a fine paint job.

The point was that there isn’t a lot of 7/8 stuff out there, so it might be a base for a “bashing”
