Large Scale Central

In-ko-pah RR -- Hotel Torgo

I’ve made some more progress in designing the next building for the town of Dos Manos. It will be a three-story hotel in “Mission Revival” style architecture (arches, stucco and Spanish tile). This will be the largest building I’ve done so far, and I wanted to make sure I get it right. So to work out the design, I built a mockup out of foam core art board. This turned out to be kind of fun and a lot easier for me than trying to draw it (I work better in 3D than in 2D). Best of all, it gives me a way to see how it fits into the layout. Here are some shots of the mockup in place on the layout:

The actual model will be made of pvc foam board. This is a material I’ve never used for modeling before, so I’m curious to see how it works out. I have some 6mm sheets ordered, which should arrive on Friday. I’m still looking into my options for creating individual Spanish tiles in 1/24th scale.

Great job on the mock-up!!

Looks great Ray!

Alec

Very nicely done.

Doc Tom

For a mock up that one neat looking building. Just add some stucco to the outside and some windows and it would pass most peoples inspection…

neat looking hotel… fits right in with the town…

Another work of art from the Master!

Very cool Ray and nice choice on the architecture!
I haven’t worked with the “gatorboard” for modeling yet either so I will follow your progress. As for the tera cotta tiles have you considered ripping some 1/2" pcv pipe down the middle and cutting your individual tiles from the 2 halves? 1/2’ might be too big though but it’s a thought.

Make be time for some Plastruct Red Tile sheets. I have checked them out and they are impressive as far as the detail. Just a thought.

Yeah I thought about the commercial stuff as well Mike but I figured Ray wanted to make his own "WHICH HE SHOULD" ........as it will be sooooo much better and besides I think he's retired anyway! :)

I know! I almost felt like I was done, when I put the mockup out there!

Real Spanish tiles are about 18" long, and 8.5" across at the wide end, about 7.5" across at the narrow end. Last night I cut some 3/8" Evergreen styrene tubing into 3/4" lengths, and then split them roughly in half. Then sanded them to have a slight taper. It’s doable, and they look good, but still not sure I want to make several hundred or more that way. I may use them to make a mold and cast a bunch in resin.

There ya go…Didn’t even cross my mind to make a mold…I have made molds for all my doors and windows. Getting ready to make some saguaro cactus molds for John. after I get those done, I can go into mass production.

Precision Products makes a Spanish Tile veneer that might work for you:

I’ve made a little progress on the actual construction… The main structural components (walls, etc.) were cut from white 6mm PVC foam board. A few parts were made from a piece of black, 1/2" thick PVC board that I picked up a while back from the local plastics dealer. I printed out drawings of the windows onto cardstock, and cut them out to use as templates for laying out the window openings on the walls:

Here’s a shot of the front and side wall pieces:

I had to cut a separate piece to go behind the middle section of the front wall, where it extends above the rest of the wall:

The corners and the window openings were rounded off by sanding:

Here’s the front wall put together. There is a half-inch gap in the middle section, just above the doorway arch. This is where the balcony will be attached:

Here are some of the parts for the sidewalk and arches:

The window frames are made from strip styrene and are built up in two layers. They are designed to be inserted into the window openings from behind:

That’s all for now. Enjoy!

How are you rounding the cut edges on the foam board? Sanding??? It looks great!

Wow - you sure do make nice cuts in that stuff. Nice and smooth. What are you using?

Thanks. I’m just using a saber saw. For the long, straight cuts I clamp a straight edge, like an aluminum angle, to guide the saw. Short straight sections, and curves, are cut free hand.

So far I like working with this pvc stuff, it’s pretty easy to cut and sand.

Hmmm! A brain surgeon with a sabre saw. That’s mighty precise work for any kind of saw let alone a sabre saw. Nice!
