Large Scale Central

I'm not dead, just woodworking!!!

Next on the list is to get the lighting in. I have a remote ballast for a 6’ double VHO florescent fixture where each bulb is individual switched on or off. I also have a remote ballast for a double fixture metal halide set up where each are independent. That will cure my very serious lighting woes.

I just replaced my kitchen’s florescent tubes with LEDs, instant on and a nice bright color.

They’ll save 56% (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-smile.gif)

We’ve replaced just about every bulb in our house with LEDs, and our power consumption dropped 45% compared to the same period the previous year. Its amazing.

I considered this. I have them in my kitchen and love them. But i have the ballast and the VHO bulbs are so bright they will blind you and they are not effect as much by the cold. Its simply a case of using what I have. With them being remote I can put the two bulbs in different locations. And since they are in my shop they won’t be on a lot to really notice the power savings. They are great though.

I forgot I promised to show a pic of my fractional burner.

Its the wood box with the switch and wires coming out of it. On the inside is a 1200v microwave transformer, the fan from the microwave, and the leads. I wanted a readily accessible switch that had the light on it so I could visually see that it is off or on. These things are uber dangerous. I have a great deal of respect for it. I want no mishaps. So when not in use it is unplugged. Plus you have the light so you know when the leads are charged. I also at this point do not touch them when operating it. But I have decided to make insulated wood handles for my probes and use welding gloves so I can hang onto them. You need a little more precise accuracy to get the best patterns. I might even use wood rapped in rubberized electrical tape. Needless to say this thing scares the shit out me but it sure is cool.

The beginnings of my new router table. Since I got the new (to me) table saw, I took apart the old beast. I am using the base for the new router table. Will be much nicer than the old small one I had. And it will double as a out feed table for my table saw. I am going to clamp it to the back of my table saw and that will more or less be its permanent location. I still have to cut the hole for the router face plate to drop into and the new 3’ fence.

The fluorescent fixtures in our garage are all dying, so I’m planning to have them replaced with the LED fixtures. Depending on how well that works out, I may eventually replace the fluorescents in my office and our kitchen. I’m tired of dealing burned out tubes and dead ballasts.

Nice router table! I’ve been considering a router table since I’m doing more cabinet work but this gives me new ideas!

Ray,

Costco has 4 ft LED replacement bulbs that are a direct replacement for fluorescent bulbs. You can also get 4ft LED bulbs that are self contained. You take out the existing fluorescent bulbs and ballast and direct wire your incoming 120v supply to one end of the fixture. Replace the cover and install the new LED bulbs and you’re done. I have done both for clients and they both work well and are easier than replacing the entire fixtures.

Steve

Steve,

This is the second table I have built. It’s easy and in my opinion just as nice. The fence will be s box design that will allow a vacuum hose to attach. The fence then becomes a hose. I will make a split fence also

I got the router table finished.

This will go a long way in getting done two of the three presents I need to get finished by the 21st. I still need to get the ShopSmith motor rebuilt. I will also begin my thickness sander build soon; after the curent presents and build challenge.

I also got a great deal on this maple slab. 60" long 26" wide and when flattened will be over 3" thick. Got it for 50 bucks.

Nice looking router table there, Devon. Good re-purposing of the old table saw. Great find on the maple slab, can’t wait to see what you come up with to use it on. Then again, you could get a lot of scale lumber out of it (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Dan I already know what will become of the maple slab. I have long wanted to build a gaming table. It will have an inlaid chess board, backgammon board, and cribbage board in the top. I will then build a matching box to hold the pieces plus a wooden yahtzee game. So the table will be a chess/checkers/backgammon/cribbage/yahtzee/and ??? table. The legs for the table will be live edge walnut from the slabs I already have. I will also make a cushion for it so it will double as a bench seat. It will be for the down stairs man cave where room is a premium.

Not don’t stay awake at night waiting for it. This was a good deal and the project is way down my list of priorities.

Don’t you have a railroad to finish?

What do you called to finished? I have two spurs to put in this spring but other than that it’s done track wise. I have sll kinds of bridges and buildings and what not but that is the rest of my life. No hurry rhere.

No finished pics of it being used …jump in Dave @ any time …

All you want is a picture of it being used to call it done?

Your not getting off that easily …

Lol oh, I was gonna go shovel of a couple of feet and set a loco on it

It WOULD be nice to see some recent photos of it! (https://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Today recent enough . . . Okay, okay, I will make you this promise. I will take plenty of photos of it in action in April. I am hosting our club meeting then. I will have to have it cleaned up and the last spurs in by then. I didn’t get my open house last year thanks to my brain. But now that that is out of the way I will be getting on the RR in and around March when the snow clears.
