Ideas

I feel my Dunkirk engine is missing something but I dont know what. I was thinking about adding a little more detail to my Dunkirk engine (but because of my lack of knowledge on engines and because of so few pictures to go by) I want to make the engine a little more realistic. Im going to add a few little things like tools etc… What else can I do to make it a little more realistic or should I keep it as is?

What amazes me is a logging loco has the same junk on it if it is the US, Europe or Asia.

Starters? Hang a re-railer or two on each side, plus a rooster or poling pole, for car movement and or other long bits of wood to help re-raling.

A couple secured heavy duty screw bottle jacks, and a bit of steel cable/chain would work.

Try Ozark for such bits. They make some nice parts, especially for narrow gauge and logging.

As far as details, a few will go a long way, don’t junk things too much. Also secure them in a prototypical manner, which a lot of modellers neglect to do. Just sticking some oil cans on the “flatcar” floor in the 1:1 world and they would fall off. A tool/storage box on either side of the boiler or behind the tender maybe?

Or go all out and put a dummy steam winch on the front like the “Gypsy” locos!

BTW Shawn, I have always liked what you have done with this loco, amazing what a bit of paint does to an HLW model…can we expect the same with the Rodgers?

Shawn, look here for some ideas, there is a lot of interesting stuff on this website:

Thanks. The Rogers will eventually get a make over as well. First I want to change up my old REA Rogers. I want to make that into a backwoods loco and possibly make it the main loco to pull my fire cars. Im going to add wood bumbers and really weather it up. The newer Rogers im not sure yet but I have been getting the back issues of tall timbers and timber times. Im sure something will pop into my head. I also want to make a climax engine out of parts from my big hauler and a flat. So much more to do and not enough time. LOL

Ah, so you have two Rogers? Missed that part somehow.

Another part to consider: I often wondered about the slopeback tenders that Aristo put behind these. Has anyone tried a more “period” looking HLW/Kalamazoo tender?

Grab irons? Poling pockets? Antlers? A water bag? Do you have the obligatory long spout oil can and coffee mug/pot on the backhead tray above the fire door? Also might want to add injector and sand pipes to both sides.

Injectors.
Sand lines.
Coupler lift bars.
Air pump.
Better pilot steps.
Back-up light.
Horizontal grab irons on beams.

Two words: add junk

…also needs either a chicken or a cat, I don’t mind which…so long as it’s not a vulture.

Waaaay too many of them around in OUR house.

That picture would make an ideal christmas card for next year if you are into mailing out cards. I still every christmas take one of my best Lone Wolf RR pictures and have Vista Print turn them into real christmas cards that I can mail out. I think though that snail mail card mailing is becoming a thing of the past :frowning:

So far great ideas. I know where to put the junk stuff but im not very good mechanicaly. On an engine like this where would the Injectors, Sand lines and air pump go? If someone can photo shop the locations onto my picture that would be a great help. .

Air pump, side of boiler above running boards, plumbed…steam line from front wall of cab, vent to top of stack or bottom of smokebox…pressure air to tank…

Sand lines…from sand dome base, in general direction of front drivers, through running boards.

Injectors, towards front of main boiler course, just behind smokebox, about 1/3 the way up the side…feeds into control either in cab or in front of cab.
Both sides.

Injects water into boiler with pressure bypass.

One more detail…! Often racks were added along the walkway areas beside the boiler in which to stack wood for fuel. Presumably the tank would be used for water.

Siphon hose for water?

Still great ideas coming. I noticed I have parts from my big hauler that I can use like the air tanks and I think the other piece is the injectors??? Another question the Big Hauler has two air tanks should the Dunkirk have two one on each side or just one on one side??? 4-6-0 has on both sides.

That Hartland loco is supposed to be a Dunkirk? I always wondered what kind of loco it was, just assumed it was something they made up.

Its a freelance version of a Dunkirk. The closest picture I can find is this one. Its one of my favarite engines. Brian also made a real nice looking one very similar. I ended up ordering a bunch of stuff for the dunkirk since I had to order parts for my Fire Fighting rolling stock.

That is a most interestng picture. I have been trying to get ascale height off the Dunkirk picture. Maybe the bell or the whistle could be a considered for sizing everything else. Certainly a good picture.

Ric I believe I have a few more pictures close to this one. If you want I can scan them and send them to you.

Shawn,

I’d really like that, thank you. As I told you early on the HLW equipment is good, but I find it hard to get a handle on the scale. The Big John has always been on the short list. Those pictures and the work you have done are certainly pushing that closer to something I must have.
