Ideas

Shawn,

I’d really like that, thank you. As I told you early on the HLW equipment is good, but I find it hard to get a handle on the scale. The Big John has always been on the short list. Those pictures and the work you have done are certainly pushing that closer to something I must have.

Its a great engine and their is alot that can be done. It just goes and goes no matter how dirty the track is. I have always been supries that you dont see more HLW stuff, then I guess the scale thing can be the issue. I plan on going to York in the Spring. I will bring my Dunkirk with me if you would like. I know last year you wanted me to but I never made it. This year I took the friday off from work. I wont have any excuses of not going.

Shawn I have most of those things on my Dunkirk -

No coupler lift bars with link and pin couplers! -Brian

That Hartland loco is supposed to be a Dunkirk? I always wondered what kind of loco it was, just assumed it was something they made up.
I always thought of the Big John as a Dunkler. Part Dunkirk and part Heisler (with the side rods on the trucks).

I always wondered what the difference was. Is theer any advantage to having side rods vs none?

Thanks for the pictures of your build. I love that one you built as well as the Forney. I just remembered yesterday that you had pictures of it on your web page. That helps a lot as for the mechanical end of the details. It sure makes a hudge difference with the tanks and hoses.
One of my other projects is to make something similar to what you did, using my old big Hauler boiler/cab and a Bachmann flat. Just have to order some trucks, not sure if Im going with HLW or Bachmann shay trucks.

Well theres a lot of difference in a Heisler and a Dunkirk…in reality a Dunkirk is more or less a Climax, an earlier one that is. Heislers have siderods because they only have gears on one axle and power is transmitted to the other by the rods. The Heisler also has it cylinders mounted in a v type arrangment, a Dunkirk has a marine type engine that drops down the center of the frame…

Ric this is a good site for geared locos. They have a few Dunkirks and the different classes. After reading it looks like the Hartland version is a mix between the climax and Dunkirk. It could be a good thing because you can either make it into a climax or a dunkirk. Heres the site and looks like you can get a book on the dunkirks. Might be a good read.

Ric I also forgot about this. Its the story about Phil Jensen and Hartland. In it they mention the story behind the Big John.

Ken and Barbi were a little too big and I seemed to have lost my my little pony unicorn collection. (Dave you think I can borrow yours?) I liked your idea so much that I was able to find something comparable. Hows this:

hehe

When we were investigating building a 1:6 railway with the kids out in the country, we found that Ken and Barbie are 1:6 scale giants, and G.I. Joe is a 1:6 scale 6th grader.

Incredible work Shawn!!!
Ya’ see how nice that looks!!!
LMAO
