Large Scale Central

I lost my live-steam virginity today!

I took delivery of my new black Accucraft Forney today at PA Live Steamers in Collegeville this morning.

I oiled it, added steam oil, water and butane, lit and it ran like a champ. I am 100% happy with it, the way it runs and how nice it it built.

A new addiction for me.

Uh-oh, now you are in trouble!

We want pictures…
I like my Forney.
I had a derailment problem with my Forney, it was a quick fix though, runs great now.
David

Ha Ha,
Time to get crackin and get you a loop down outside

Another member of the Brotherhood of Burnt Fingers - Welcome & Congratulations

Edit to add: We don’‘t meed no stinkin’ numbers !

I already planned a loop for outside, drew it out and got the okay from “HH6” (SWMBO) ;-

I read about the problem with the pilot on yours David. I didn’t have that problem, but I was watching for it. I tried running it in reverse, but it didn’t run as smooth consistently as it did forward.

  1. You will learn, in due course, that eyebrows are not necessarily a permanent part of your facial landscape.

  2. Remember, too, that metal doesn’t have to be glowing to be VERY hot. Trust your instincts here - if it has been near an 800C gas-fed fire for twenty minutes or so, then it is probably too hot to pick up and cuddle.

  3. Bubbling paint on the smokebox in natures way of telling you to turn the gas down a bit.

  4. Ditto on the appearance of 12" flames out of the stack.

  5. If you DO inadvertantly allow the boiler to run dry, do NOT instantly fill it up with cold water - leave it to cool down in open air, and remember point 2.

There is much more, but if I told you then you’d learn nothing, Glasshopper.

LOL!

How does a live-steam fanatic catch a running engine attempting to commit suicide as it goes into a curve at an excessive speed? I had my hands ready to catch it, but it held the rails like it was on rails.

My Forney runs quite nice in reverse.
When you get yours broke in it should be fine.
I’m glad you didn’t have pilot troubles.
Heck I don’t even own a parachute.
I was thinking about putting RC in mine, but then I spent all my money on building a pond.
I don’t know if I could handle the install anyway.

WoW! I ordered a new Summerlands chuff pipe last Thursday, it arrived in the post at noon today and by 12:15 I was enjoying the sound of my new Forney steam engine.

David;
Nice Forney!
I maybe just a little partial though, since I have one like yours. One exception I got rid of the Chinese Star on the smoke box plate.
David

David - with that in mind, you might care to remove the ‘Chinese’ stars from the centres of the drivers on #4449:wink:

tac

Those nine year old Chinese girls need to earn a living too! I will have to change that star tho.

Hmmmm. Many of the older-style US locos had stars on the smokebox front and other locations - v. stylish it was considered to be back then. Have a look for yourself on google…

tac

The reason I got rid of the star is because I plan to put a number 1 there. The two Forneys would look alike except, the Chinese star is gone on my boiler front.
The little girls still got paid to put it there.
I want to put a number there.
You would do the same thing if you wanted a # there.
If you don’t like it , too bad it’s not your Forney.

I was looking at those Chuff pipes that you mentioned.
I might be able to scare up enough funds to get a set.
Sounds like it was a quick install.
Would you recommend them.
You should do a video of the engine featuring the sound.
Happy rails
David

Nope I don’t plan on putting any thing there, numbers are impossible to read there when it is running.
The star is cast on the plate not painted the border is painted.

Touchy, aren’t we? Didn’t say I didn’t like it, just mentioned it was typically American is all.

tac

I noticed the star too, but didn’t associate it with Red China until you mentioned it. Huuummm!
