I can add to the fun, I have to de-isolate for my cancer treatments, so in a compromised state I am among the infected… then I got stuck 4 times before they got an iv in me, for the worst MRI in my life… I wish I could think about hobby stuff.

John, I hope you are not stating you have tested positive for the CV, just that you were stating you have a compromised immune system.

Ooops, Not to spread fear, I don’t know if I do, no tests, I just know I’m compromised and vulnerable. In the past, my colds have popped up after a visit to the Cancer center.
I already have 2 symptoms; hurts to breathe and I cough up mucus/phlegm. (from Radiation burns).
I have a bruise the size of an Atlantic driver in the crook of my right arm where as forewarned, my vein didn’t play nice and blew out. I tell them to use my hands, not preferred for less pain, but for their success. Still they are a vain lot and keep trying to stick (my vein) where few have before. It’s teaching hospital (U of Az), everybody gets 2 tries, before calling in help. Unfortunately there is no 2nd stickee to call in!
No fever today.

Ditto, sending good thoughts/prayers your way. I have more experience in what you are experiencing than I want to share, but yes, tell them to use your hands, I don’t have easily accessible sites in the crook of my arm, but they keep wanting to go there and it’s a pain, literally.

Our hopes and prayers are that we all get through this together and stronger on the other side. Thank god for hobbies or I would go crazy watching the news. I’m 66 years old and my wife is 67 , so we took a month off work and are staying inside as much as possible. My local hobby shop here in Illinois is closed and I stocked up on some supplies but forgot to get others I need to finish some projects. Oh well , stay safe !

They weren’t brought up with good work skills or good parenting skills either. The problem as far as hobbies and general life knowledge goes back to our teachers and school departments that told everyone that they were changing the curriculum to all college bound based studies, removing the shop/home economics classes from both middle and high school classes. They said if any student wanted knowledge of a trade, they would have to go to a vocational school. This move in my opinion and others, has significantly contributed to the downfall of the last generation or two. Today’s kids don’t even have an inkling of how to use a screwdriver, hammer, a stove, or a washing machine and all of them should! We’re seeing the results of our teachers, school departments, professors, and colleges effect on the younger people and it’s not good. When parents go to work and kids are in school, they need to learn things, including basic life things like family financials too. Today, they’re taught nothing to help them in those categories.
…and notice how we adults have even stooped to almost constantly calling the latest offspring “Kids”…
THEY ARE NOT KIDS, Kids are young goats, in case we forget.
The young are human beings, and are “CHILDREN”, or YOUNG ADULTS.

According to Merriam Webster the #1 definition of “kid” is a young person. A young goat is #2. The Cambridge dictionary defines kid as: a child; a young person. So who gets to decide whether or not the word “kid” is proper? So I disagree with you Fred my children are always my children but they are no longer kids; My children are adults, not kids.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Ted, I agree with everything you said but I would like to add that we as parents also play a role in the downfall of the younger generations (our kids). Not sure we can blame it all on the schools because we should take the lead and make sure our children are being taught “general life knowledge” and I’ll be the first to admit that I’m as guilty as the next parent. Now my son knows more than most kids his age because I’ve made him learn about life, but he doesn’t have the same knowledge my Dad instilled in me or what I learned in shop class or home economics (yes, I took home ec, why, because I like to eat) and that’s my fault. You mentioned trades, one of the things I see everyday is the lack of skilled trades people. Talk to most anyone in the construction industry and they will agree that its hard to find them and rarely can you find good ones. Its my belief that there is a huge opportunity in the trades for the younger folks that want to “work” for a living and make damn good money. But kids today are simply not exposed to the opportunity in school or at home. Very sad, unfortunately.
Dan, I completely agree it’s parents too. I really just didn’t want to open a big can of worms. I was brought up by a very strict Portuguese/Italian father and an Italian/Irish mother. My dad owned a federally inspected slaughter house and all of us kids started working at a very young age. When I graduated high school my average work week was 88-90 hours, 7 days a week. i took college courses in HS along with industrial arts from 8-12 grade taking advanced shop classes in 11-12th. I had a SAT Score of 734 yet stayed at the family business when my dad got sick. He died when I was 22 but had already instilled in me and my siblings a work ethic and most of what I mentioned kids need today he put in us.
When I had kids of my own I tried to raise them like I was raised. Today my oldest is a veterinarian with her own practice. My middle child is a registered nurse, and my son is a licensed electrical foreman running crews all through the South Eastern states doing industrial electric in power plants, paper mills, and most of the larger industrial plants. While my first two went to college, my son went to a vocational HS and apprenticed during his summer vacations from HS. He’s already bought three houses having redone and flipped the first two, he also has no college debt and done all this before the age of 29. So I tend to have no patience for the excuses I hear today from today’s parents as is does start with parents and their children are a direct reflection of themselves.

The KIDS have grown up with the whole world of knowledge and entertainment at their fingertips, so the KIDS today can find any question within seconds of asking it, as my wife and I do too. when something we hear or see pops up that we want to know about, we grab our phone and google it . The KIDS have been raised from an early age to seek out the phone as something to calm them down when parents want the kids to be quiet, and unfortunately some parents let the phone be their baby sitter. My grown adult KIDS fortunately have not allowed this to happen with their KIDS, they limit time the KIDS can use their electronic things.
Dan about your thoughts, I see it a lot too, our labor force is almost all immigrants, the pay is still there to make a good living as a tradesman. Mike Rowe, from the tv show “Dirty Jobs” (by the way he has shown several jobs I have done in that show) has a foundation that awards scholarships to KIDS whowant to continue into a tradeschool, which for some KIDS would be better than and much higher paying than labor jobs at a factory or warehouse. “This Old House” tv show also is involved in 2 tradeschool type programs to help KIDS get into tradeschool. A job in one of the trades is so much more sastifiying in that years later you can show people, see that building ? I built that! or did all the electrical or the brick/tile work.
