Well, I know what Devon does for a living and we all need to pray that it doesn’t get bad enough for him to get to stay home and play with trains. Trust me, if it gets that bad we are … let’s just hope it doesn’t get that bad. Not to rain on your parade Devon, but you know where I’m coming from.
Yes Dan I do. The day I cant work is the day real panic will set in. But rest assured to at least the people we serve our crew is business as usual. Sick or not.
Let’s just say some things are taken for granted. We are told to be washing our hands, someone out there is making sure when you open the tap water comes out. While I dont want to take away from the healthcare workers who are working at ground zero to fight this. Somewhere out there are people no one thinks about who are making sure they can do it. Thank the water guy, the power guy, the trash truck driver, the truck driver, etc. With out them doctors and nurse would be forced to be faith healers.
I dont want thanks. Just smile and give me a nice conversation. It’s my job and I do it gladly. Just dont complain about your water bill.
My company deals with water and the after product … every one has to have a place to put alllll that TP … (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)
I have run two reconnaissance missions to our local Hobby Town (next town North); who sadly is closing. Not for lack of business, but for the realization that he would like to enjoy some semi-retirement years and hobby businesses are a tough sell today. I have been buying up small supplies for someday needs, You just can’t loose at 75% off, but pickings are thin. I grabbed what I thought was about $20 of miscellaneous stuff and it rang up as $5 with tax! I should go back as I don’t think he has more than a week or so left before everything is gone.
Still going in to work in the evenings for 2-3 hours a day just to finish up some in-progress jobs. I probably have one or two evenings left and I’ll be on unpaid leave On the bright side; my railroad will be in grate shape this summer!

ewww poopy water. Now their are the true unsung heros. Icky. I had a chance to switch over to the dark side early in my water career. But then i saw a crew fixing a air relief valve on a pressure sewer line that could not be shut down or it would back up all the lift stations. They already had every pumper truck in the county pumping the lift stations to reduce the amount of times the pumps would kick on and pressurize the pipe. They took the valve off and before they could get the new one on a lift station came on and there was a poop geyser. And they couldn’t run they had to just stand there and get er done. Right then and there I knew I wanted to stay in fresh water.
Jon,
that in my opinion is going to be the largest tragedy of this story. Not the sick not the dying but the people who are financially destitute because of shutdowns or the lack of spending of discretionary income. While I have one of those necessary jobs that no one thinks about; I am blessed to have it because it is little effected by the ups and downs of the economy. Its gonna have to be really really bad for me to not get paid because our particular water district is a taxing entity. As long as people pay their property taxes I will be okay. So while I complain a lot I am very blessed to be secure during this craziness. And the wife and I have made a point of spending. So that our local businesses can hopefully stay afloat.
Great the week I get back to work, all food places are closing down, I don’t even want to think about stopping at a Walmart to get supplies, and since I have a large truck(18 wheels) I cannot use drive- thru. Going to be an interesting week . If only I could stop at Hobby stores along the way, might dig up some deals!
I heard this the other day that truckers were having issues eating on the road. Never thought about it but you can’t go in and you can’t use the drive through and most places won’t let you walk up to the drive through which is down right stupid.

Hopefully the truck stops will keep their food places open. Most of them have take out counters in them.
Some states have been enforcing the close all restaurants to include truck stops , we will see how long those stupid ideas last.
On a related note rest areas are being closed in some states too, and there has been a huge shortage already of truck parking spots, and some towns are still ticketing guys trying to sleep for parking in the town or city. Some rest areas are also being closed because of toilet paper theft, hell you have to be really desperate to thing the gossamer thin single ply stuff is worth stealing!!!
Yea, Pete, when everything starts grinding to a halt we’ll see if they figure out why.
On another note, around here the restaurants are open, but only for take-out.

I don’t want to dismiss the seriousness of the situation but the last few years has taught me levity is a valuable coping mechanism.
Denial is also very underrated. (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)
Thanks Dev, and good for you. But hording or no hording, we’ll be expecting you to employ all those materials soon, haha!
Soon

looks like Victor Smith and a few other board denizens are about to be hermetically welded into the domiciles shortly. Maybe he can get the new outdoor line operational…
Devon;
I work part-time at a local (Roanoke, VA) hobby shop. You are not the only hoarder. Several people have been in to stock up on supplies for the anticipated period of isolation. One man was in today stocking up on enamel paints, so he can finish those 1:24 automobile kits that have remained unbuilt for a few years.
Best wishes for your projects, David Meashey
Stuck at home but don’t have the extra time for hobbies. Im IT for a large financial institution and we just setup 3400 employees in the last 5 days to work from home!
I guess many of us, wherever in the world we live, are, or will be confined to barracks. At least there are plenty of jobs (honey do’s for Statesiders) or projects that have been on the back burner for some while. Not many railroad projects ** but there are quite a few home decorating ones which were anticipated for summer days but can be brought forward now.
** However, there is always something that can be done on an outdoor railroad - weather permitting. That grade can be lowered, structures painted/repaired and after all the activity you can just sit back with a refreshing drink - the choice of that is yours of course (cider is a local drink) - just watching the trains go by.
Well, I have been furloughed, so now I can experience some of the “Free time” that the retired members of my clubs have. Maybe I too will get some projects done.
I have a decent stockpile of modeling supplies, including 90% isopropyl alcohol. As for toilet paper, well, I will cross that bridge when I get there.
My voluntary leave has just turned into state ordered leave. Gov. Malloy announced on Friday that all non-essential business must close by Monday. I guess signs aren’t essential; so I will be at home for the foreseeable future. One advantage; now that the time away from work is no longer my choice; I can file for unemployment IF their website survives the onslaught.
One last mission to Hobbytown USA today, if they are still open, to buy up anything that looks interesting for my supplies horde.
Ugh Sorry guys. I can’t imagine how stressful this time must be for many people who are not only having to worry about the disease but how to pay the bills also. God bless you all and I am praying
