Curmudgeon,
I never would have thought you would be a sci-fi or Brit sci-fi fan to boot!

Dave, I should gather them all up and bring 'em over. Then I'd have a whole fleet of repaired locos. But at what cost?................:) :) Are they worth fixing? jb
Nope, send them to me and I'll pay shipping!

I hadn’t previously heard of the film. I’ll look for it.

John:

I’m amazed that Bachmann hasn’t backed the Sprectum locomotive’s lifetime warranty for these folks, thus leaving them dead!

Even more so when I see BBT’s product announced as defective and apparently non-repairable! First, I’m surprised that it stopped working, but second, I would have thought Barry would step up to get it fixed.

I do understand that a ‘set locomotive’, probably bought for under $100, would not be expected to have a very long life, but still I do see lots of Big Haulers in long term operation, so they can’t all be bad.

Personally, I’ve had very good results with Bachmann, including a first generation Shay plus a Climax and Centennial 2-6-0. I am prepared to replace the Shay’s trucks, but even after something like 8 years, it continues to soldier on. I did receive a 2-4-0 with a broken axle from Train World a few years ago, but TW replaced it immediately, and the replacement even had the later vertical shaft motor.

Is it possible that the folks you mentioned who have all these broken locomotives have changed their interest and aren’t doing proper maintenance or repairs? I know that’s the case with my LGB #2017 0-4-0 with powered tender lettered “LGB”. I can’t believe I would purchase such an expensive piece that clearly didn’t fit my model RRing interest or scenario. It’s currently parked out of sight so I’m not reminded of how I was taken!

Happy RRing,

Jerry

I am really interested in the BBT issue.
The worst thing I think I’ve seen is an axle gear setscrew come loose.
There were some wheels where the crankpin screw stripped out, but he fixes those.

One 4-4-0 that John is referring to is a shelf queen because the owner won’t send it in nor will he take the time to even look to see what the problem is. He just purchased another locomotive. I suspect that at least some of the other locomotives John is referring to are in a similar situation. It broke, so there it sits. No honest attempt to fix it or get it fixed.

I was under the impression that our friend bought it knowing that it was “down for repair.”

I’ve run my B’manns just as much as I have run the other loco’s that I have. The only loco that I’ve had any problem with was an Aristo Mike that went dead for no apparent reason. Aristo fixed it without any hassle.

Squeaky, The point is that they are broken--not the owners are too lazy to get them fixed. The broken Bachmanns far out number the broken Red Box locos. Did you see the drawer full of broken Bachmanns at Gerry's last month?

I asked you some time late last year, “How come you didn’t bring your 2-8-0?”
You replied, “It’s not working right.”

Am I wrong? If so, I apologize.

John, you are right about my Bachmann…but…it’s not actually the locomotive that has the problem but the Phoenix sound system installed… And I’ve been too lazy to fix it…in part because I don’t really have any correct scale cars for it. That’s why I am in the process of building 6 box cars in Bob’s build-a-long. Once I have some credible cars to run with it I’ll fix the sound system and be running it again…when I can run on someone’s layout that can handle it’s width.

2 members have 2 of the 4-4-0 Spectrums. One is dead. 2 Shays that I know of are running.--- three dead. Countless big haulers are dead, even one with a Barry's Big Train drive. There's something wrong with one of the 2-8-0 Spectrum's a member has. I can remember 2 different Annies burning up on their maiden runs....
I take donations of non running locos :O Get them all boxed up and let me know when they are ready and I'll come pick them up. ;)

That would be worth a 200 mile drive one way.

No suprise then that the brit based SPAFRR is hosted at smegworld… honest

Yes we have shoes. But we don't have electricity so we have to watch TV and work on computers by candlelight.

Has anyone considered that might be the reason all those track powered engines don't run? :) :) :)
