Holy Cow Wotta Price!

This little number was being cleared out at $100-$125 just 4-5 years ago. Tonight on Ebay - Oct 4 2012:

They say a sucker is born every day.

More suckers lining up

The “value of something is only what one can get or is willing to pay for said item” Regal

And now apparently this item is rare. Just because some of them went for fire sale prices a few years ago doesn’t mean its not worth what it is selling for today. The value of something is EXACTLY what someone buys it for. That’s the very definition of value.

John,
You should have bought all you could and held them for a few years. Then put 'em on the Bay.

it is/was a toy. so it is safe to assume, that many ended up in the (not so) caring hands of children.
the few survivors will be sought after now.

plastic toy soldiers, that sold for 50 cents twenty years ago, are now priced up to 50 dollar.

I did buy one back then @ $100 . … it’s no longer mint tho’. I added boiler weight, working lights, decent coupler, driver, bloodshot googlyeyes, painted the cab interior, weighted the trailing truck, made it run right… so mine’s worthless now! (I don’t really believe that - but to collectors prolly much less than these examples…) I love mine, by the way, run it at train shows around our huge association show oval, and it’s a well-loved part of our ‘show’. Was I a sucker? - sure, if you like, but it’s always been a favourite of mine, and I have no desire to sell it. Another Casey Jr. is coming up on Ebay for sale soon, and the seller’s asking over 2,000. Interesting to watch. Having ‘modified’ mine, I have no regrets, BTW. I bought it for enjoyment, whether on the track or on the shelf, and it’s paid me and others back a hundredfold.

John I have one of those also, its still original condition, and I am sorely tempted to see what it would do on evilbay. I only keep it becuase its so unique an item.

If all you guys have 'em, how rare could it be?

Yugos are now considered “rare” also. Wonder when some evilbait user will decide he wants a Ferrari and sells his old Yugo for enough to buy one?

Dave I think most Yugos got recycled as washing machines years ago.

As those engines should have been…

Yeah, Jon, the same thought crossed my mind. I realize that question is rhetorical, but all the same... I've seen sellers on Ebay say they're rare - they wouldn't have an interest in promoting that idea, now, would they? The price of yesterday's sale, is DOWN!!!, by the way!! Believe it or not, one of these sold on Ebay on March 22 this year, for $918.

Naturally, as one of the early ‘suckers’, I’ve been fascinated to watch all this, and to read the various descriptions and declarations, real or invented for the occasion by a variety of sellers.

Right now, to get back to J.R’s comment, we’ve just seen one sell, I’ve told you about the March sale, there’s one coming up soon, there’s the one Michael Benton mentioned, on Ebay Aus, there’s the one I own, and there’s Victor’s.

So we know there were six…

But only one that has been upgraded like mine!!! Ha ha!

I have read several times that there were only ever a very limited number (?), One reason may have been that Accucraft more or less disowned them because their quality wasn’t up to their standard, that they were liquidated… but everything I’ve read is just hearsay or rumour, and the source other sellers… (!)

The only thing I know is that I liked it from the start. This item was a natural for me because Dumbo happens to be just about my all-time favourite movie… It’s because of the music… Casey Jr from that film is the original “I think I can, I think I can” choo choo train…

I have one with a DCC decoder and speaker… works ok, need to get some more pickups. It actually runs well…

Just what I imagined would be running on the Polk West Railroad…

Was that actually made by Accucraft?? I didn’t know they ever made any “toy” stuff, even as collectables.

How many cars will it pull Greg?

The way I figure it, given that I only paid $100 for mine if I put it at a starting bid of $200 I’ve already doubled my money, anything above that is gravy.I still keep it because I really like it as a piece of Disneyana.

It comes with neither cars nor working coupler, Doug... and I've always run mine solo, like a kind of go cart.. )you've seen the pic...

But I’ll tell you what… I did put a working coupler on the back of mine - in a moment of extreme folly - fitting one in the tiny space above that trailing truck was a labor of love, I can tell you. And then, for me never to have used it…

So, since you’ve asked, I’ll run a test this afternoon and get back to you.
And to Curmudgeon, who thinks the whole batch should have been melted down and recycled: ;):P;)
