Large Scale Central

Hey Y'all, it's another "hi, I'm new here" post

Hey Y’all, it’s another “hi, I’m new here” post.

Have done model trains for decades but just now decided to get regular size G gauge trains.
We live in an upper floor apartment and therefore won’t likely have our own outdoor railway but have been invited to run over at a friend’s railroad.
And there is the grandkids and Christmas tree in the living room floor thing too.

Starting off with 2 Bachmann Virginia & Truckee sets - one for me - and one for her !

I’m intending to scratchbuild some passenger and freight cars of 1860 to TOC vintage in 1:24 to 1:22 scale. Have no idea who G parts suppliers for things like trucks and things like suitable NBW castings for truss rod ends are in G - know that for HO and O, but not this big!

Also making some buildings for indoor use from balsa, corrugated fiberboard, and cardstock. Some will be low-relief for display shelf.

Have now gotten with some settlement money a couple other sets, car kits, and second-hand cars.
So, the projects begin.

later,

Welcome, Forrest.

For parts and castings, try Ozark - http://www.ozarkminiatures.com/Scripts/default.asp

For passenger trucks, you might want to look at Bachmann or LGB passenger trucks, though I’m not sure where you’d get them. There are some Bachmann passenger car kits that are available, and I believe these include the trucks. You could also use the roof pieces if you didn’t want to build them. For freight trucks, I use AristoCraft-Delton that I get from Ridge Road Station (http://www.ridgeroadstation.com/) - I believe that they might have passenger trucks as well.

Looking forward to reports of your progress.

Hi,
Welcome to LSC.

“Screw the rivets - I’m building for atmosphere!”

Couldn’t have said it better myself
Ralph

Ahh, thanks guys

Welcome aboard. You’ll have great fun with G scale.

Welcome Aboard!

Yuppers, welcome indeed. You’ll find all the advice you can handle, and then some, on this site. The sum total of knowledge exceeds the grains of sand on all the beaches of all the seas in the known universe, plus a bit more.

As for the era that you are modelling, well, David Hill here has in interest in the WoNA and the period immediately after the temporary truce at Appomatox, and Bachmann make a couple of loco’s from that era in the form of the usual American 4-4-0 and a Mogul in the same 1/20.3 scale, and very nice they are too, if you can find them. They are small enuff to fit in with your 1/22.5 stuff, since you have already 'fessed up to not being that fussed about scale.

As ever, we’ll be very interested to learn of your progress and see the pix that go with it.

So now, if you’ll excuse me, my 3-c Shay will have cooled down enuff for me to give it a once-over before running it tomorra at a model railway meet here in East Anglia, UK.

Best

Boonville…as in Northern California?
Got someone who hangs around here, lives in Boonville with an outdoor railroad, too.

Welcome

Welcome to the railroad insane…

Forrest, I just read through (a lot of ) your blog. You have a very strange mind.

You will fit in well, here. :stuck_out_tongue:

Welcome aboard.

Nope, Boonville as population +/- 8700 in the middle of Missouri.

Have seen them - they are gorgeous! Decided, though, to get another couple Bachmann sets an a Hartland 4-4-0 instead of using the money for one of those.

Welcome aboard from Eastern PA (I can smell N.J. from here.)

I too am modeling the mid to late 1800’s. I’d be glad to try and answer any questions.

Temporary Truce?

The way I learned it was that the Confederacy won, Texas later seceded from the Confederacy and that when WW1 came along both Texas and the Confederacy rejoined the Union. You have to realize though that my first five years of school were in Texas

Good to see you!

Which reminds me I wanted to ask about this:

That would be another name for what I know from miniatures gaming as the ACW? American Civil War - War of North America?

Which then reminds me that somewhere around here is book Civil War Railroads and Models. There’s some rolling stock in there I want to build; especially some PRR mail & baggage cars for which HO versions have been sitting around half done, probably ought to finish those, too.

Think I’m going to not do military stuff for the large scale, just civilian this time.
