The destruction is just amazing… http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2225108/Hurricane-Sandy-2012-Obama-declares-major-disaster-New-York-39-people-die-Superstorm.html
After looking at those pictures I feel more than fortunate.
Driving over to the sports grill for lunch we saw a few trees down and one car smashed by a tree.
Saw you posting yesterday, Bruce, so we knew you guys were okay. Glad to hear, no problems. Yesterday our skies had high clouds and lots of strong north wind in the afternoon. Amazing as to how far reaching this weather pattern has come. Suppose to have strong north winds through Thursday. The devastation on the upper east coast is impressive and kind of puts everything in perspective.

What I forgot to mention, and this will cause the Rooster great pain... The Indian statue at Indian Hill on my RR took a direct hit from a branch and was broken off it's base. Railroad management has promised to repair him and put him back in place watching over the railroad. This also gives management a chance to repair the arm that was severed many years ago. Hopefully repairs can be completed in the Spring. Perhaps he will get lifelike painting too instead of being matte black.EDIT …to state… YOU KNEW THE STORM WAS COMING!
The Indian statue was permanently affixed to a cement base. It’s not removable. It didn’t blow over, the tiny target suffered a direct hit from a 3" branch. Further inspection after my post revealed that the feathers atop his head were broken clean off. I’ll need ti hunt for this small piece of black cast aluminum in the surrounding black mulch in order to restore him. If I don’t find it I might be able to recreate from Bondo.
Glad to see you posting - now I know you too are OK

Finally back on the grid. Just got power back less then an hour ago. We still have a long rd to go. Gas station lines are very long and in some cases out of gas. Took 2 hours one day to get gas,. Really have to limit on how far I go. NJ got hit very hard especially the shore. Areas that I went to as a kid and took my kids too is completly gone. Boardwalks and houses washed away and areas leveled. Since we are limited to where we can go I used the time to clean the railroad up and get it back up and running. Ill post some pictures of the damage. Mainly buildings knocked over and one roof torn off. Glad to be back and I have a lot of catching up to do. I hope jon gets back on the grid soon.
Glad to see you back Shawn.
As Shawn et all knows from bookface; I am back on the grid since about 2PM today. I’ll post a photo of the fallen Indian this weekend.
Though myself and my family made it through the storm with little damage, much of the life right around me has been changed forever.
I feel after finally getting power and TV back the media is not really showing you what it really looks like and the real devastation of Sandy. Seeing the news footage then the personal videos its not the same. Places I grew up with living here on the Jersey shore for 33 years it is the worst I’ve ever seen, it reminds me of seeing Katrina in the south.
Tonight on most of the network channels here will be a broadcast of a benefit concert for the Red Cross. Will be on all NBC channels and HBO now.
Here is a photo link for the NJ Transit. I don’t see rail service for at least 2 weeks. Every rail crossing you see trees down on the rail and the overhead wires or the wires on the ground.

The first few links are the shore towns near me. I am just 1.5 miles from the Raritan bay and 13 miles from open ocean.

Jay I left you message but figured you did not have cell service. Glas you are ok. I still cant believe the destruction both at the shore and inland. Gas lines that are miles long, stations out of gas. NJ put a gas rationing order into effect http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2012/11/sandy_gas_ration_12_counties.html Since I was a child I went to the shore seaside etc… and we take our owe kids. Cant believe its gone. I agree the news stations have not showed the true destruction. Although it was a catagory 1 hurrican it cause the destruction of a catagory 3 because of the size of the storm, full mine and high tides.
Hey guys - Lou started this thread - he lives in NJ by the South River, he said. He also said he had 12" water in the basement and his train boxes were floating - all that on p1 of this thread…
I emailed him offlist on Nov 2 re. an offtopic matter, and so far no reply. Do any of you guys know anything? I gather NJ bore the brunt of it. Was S River hit particularly bad, d’you know? Does anyone here know Lou? Does anybody know if he’s OK, or how a person might find out? Thanks for any info you can offer.
Wait a minute - He’s online!!! I’ll bug him again offlist.
Hokey smoke, Bullwinkle! I had no idea this thread had grown to 7 pages!
We are in one piece, a lot of people just down the street had it a lot worse. We lost power ONLY for 5 days. I am resting tonight from picking up and painting. Water came up through the basement floor! About 6" higher than Irene, but I had everything up or in floatable plastic containers. I will post pix tonight or tomorrow. Railroad is mudded over, and I’m not going to deal with it until spring.
Others have no where to live, so we are very lucky.
Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers. Nothing like a hurricane and Vietnam to make you a religious person.
Hangin’ in there - Lou
OK, here’s one. Hurricane Irene came up to the letter O Hurricane Sandy came to where my fingertip is. I’m pertnear 6 foot. River came up to our basement door that is about 4 feet above floor level. Water perked up through the floor to about 10-12"

Hangin’ in there.
Good to hear from you again, Lou. We’re rooting for ya’!
This picture shows the Northern extension wiped out. Telephone poles that had tracks fastened were turned over. Firewood washed up.

The South end of the layout was washed out by mud. Track seems to be much more stabile, but…

This shows how much weight the covered bridge will hold!

This poor man down the street. The only part of the sign that was showing on Monday night was “Waterfront Property”. Notice 4 boards up is how high the water came up in his house, right in the front door! Ya gotta laugh, if you don’t, you gotta cry.

Drying out on the left coast, Lou
OUCH.
