Large Scale Central

Hello from new member

Hello LSC. I am new to this forum and this is my 1st post. I am a member of a few other popular generic large scale forums. I did not want to just lurk around so I joined the forum. Skin is old and pretty thick (although wife says my head is thicker) so I think I can fit right in here.

My nutshell bio - I have no permanent garden railway due to a confluence of issues (mostly security and the high cost to secure) but I do set up large temporary layouts in the backyard each year more than once. I have a modest amount of LGB, Aristo-craft, USAT and Bachmann trains, plus some AML rolling stock. I also have one of Rick Yoder’s brass EBT Mikados which is terrific and runs very smoothly. I use all LGB brass track and switches - all R3 and R5. Most of my equipment is Baltimore & Ohio RR; my LGB is mostly Euro locos & roll. stock except the B&O F7 ABA and matching passenger cars. I use track power - both DC and LGB MTS II. I ordered the new BBT Outside Frame Connie 2-8-0 replacement drive to convert the B’mann Connie to battery/RC.

I don’t have any scratch building experience in this hobby and have not been around the hobby long enough to be an 'expert" resource on much of anything. But that doesn’t keep me from offering opinions  if I think I can help with accurate info.

Hope to be able to contribute a good idea once in a blue moon and otherwise learn from the rest of you.

Cheers
Al in Sykesville MD

Hi Al.
Nice to meet you.
Thick skin and even thicker skull…you’ll fit right in
Ralph

Welcome, too bad you can’t build. You in a local club and run on members layouts? Might join one if not.

Welcome Al…

Welcome aboard Al

Welcome you picked a great site. I was never good at kitbashing etc. and still not but the only way to learn is by doing it and practice. Of course help from great people on this site.

Al, welcome aboard.

Al - Welcome indeed from me and the boys over here in Ontario, Tokyo, UK and Oregon [Not all at the same time though.] You’ll find that pretty much all you do, WE do as well, some more, some less, but we are all joined together with our love of trains, big and small.

I’m luckier than most - I get to play on all the usual garden RR scale stuff, sparkie and steam, then I move up to 1/3rd scale steam, then up to 760mm/2ft 6in gauge in Wales, and finally up to standard gauge in Oregon - logging locos as well as Class 1…they con’t come any better, IMO than the Daylight and her companion E-1.

Since you are only down the ways from us up in Ottawa, you might give some earnest consideration to joining up with us at the next Annual “Invasion of Friends”,- one way or another it’s a great time spread over three or four days in Canada/USA with some great like-minded people.

Best

Welcome, Al
Young Terry got it a bit confused…but he means well. Terry introduced a slight change to the Annual “Invasion of Friends”, which used to be known as “The Annual American Invasion”, by representing the British end of things at the 2009 version.
It is still a mass invasion of sorts, and even gives the opportunity for the suburbs of Washington to talk with the suburbs of Ottawa in a friendly manner, without the hinderence of politics or religion. Heck we even have Montreal represented in Ottawa…in a most friendly manner.
You will sooner or later meet young Bruce Chandler, from down your way…he has been making the treck up here for just about as long as most invaders.

It’s good that you have joined us…

Al,

Be careful listening to the good Fryer/Friar. What he calls friends, we view as re-enforcements. Each year there seems to be an increase in the number of new, (old?) friends that show up. It is very intimidating. Yes, they are a friendly lot, but we also have noticed the visitors from Great Britain all have military experience. And then there is “Iggy”, an unsavory character if there ever was one. How he got on an international flight, I’ll never know. The guy from Montreal brings his body guard and they speak in an unknown language. They say it is French, but my wife took 4 semesters of French in school and she can’t understand a word of what they say. There are pictures of Nicole conversing with Iggy. This is very uncomfortable. Chandler is one of our spies from an unsuspecting area of Virginia, that looks tranquil on the surface, but probably houses a secondary government facility five stories down. Burke is not that far from the Capitol, especially by sub-terrainian rail. Jean is the one in charge of that operational unit.

Hi Al & Welcome. You may need hip waders more often than the thick skin. It can get awfully deep in here at times

Welcome Al, sooooo you made it after all, eh?! Enjoy!

Welcome to the site, Al. If you have any issues, don’t hesitate to email me.

Welcome aboard, Al. Grab a barrel and have a seat. The 10:27 is on time, I’ve heard. After she arrives, we can get down to some serious lie swapping… er… story telling.

Thank you all for the welcomes and the introductions. I have not yet joined a large scale club; there are a few located within an hour’s drive. I appreciate the invitations to the northern events as well; if my health holds up and SWMBO ever consents I may even take you up on them. Never been to Ottawa; actually I just got over the border at Niagara Falls last Christmas for the 1st time in my life. But for now I’ll be reading here and learning and will try to contribute something useful when I am able.
Cheers
Al

Welcome

Al welcome to the nut farm. Great group here can go wrong.
