Greenbrier 60' High cube boxcars

I bought a bunch of USA Trains 60’ boxcars on sale with the intention of removing the auto parts box and re-using the frame to build other types of cars. These Gunderson/Greenbrier high cubes are my first 2. I used mostly sheet styrene and PVC cut with the CNC a few 3d printed details and brass grabs. There are A LOT of parts!

I modified Kadee #904 couplers to replace the stock ones using the existing box. I’ve shared files for printing jigs to facilitate this.

So would it have been easier to start from scratch with the under frame or was the kitbash worth it?

And the other pondering is what are you planning doing with the old shells?

The point of using the USAT frame was to utilize the nice metal trucks and bolsters. The trucks are a $54 value and I paid $70 for the cars so $16 for the frame which is far more detailed than I would have built.

Not sure yet. Lineside structures or sell them for more than $16.

I’ve always loved the high-cubes in RBOX yellow. Very nicely done.

That’s quite the price at $70! I thought I got a steal of a price when I bought mechanical refers for $90 a few years back and I didn’t even get metal trucks.

Maybe you have to remember manufacturer shipping across the US in your price Craig

They seem to be included in many Charles Ro sales. I’m thinking many avoid them because of the required radius. These have not only the metal trucks but also metal bolsters and check this out.

I figure he included shipping as those were on sale for $80.

I’ll have to remember to look closer at the cars that have metal trucks next sale. Metal stirrups as well I hear from the video. :grinning:

Yep shipping added a bit but I as long as I can average under $100 per car, it helps me sell it to the CFO. I’m trying hard not to over buy but I’m definitely wanting/needing a few more varieties of cars including more covered hoppers.

Those look fantastic Dan.

Folks seem to assume all my work is 3d printed. While I still do use 3d printing for some cars, I find that large flat sheet metal surfaces of modern rolling stock is best replicated with good old fashioned scratch builders material - sheet plastic.

In this diagram, 3d printed (resin) parts are in blue, brass is yellow and everything else is sheet plastic (Styrene or PVC)

Sheet plastic covers a lot of surface fast!

I have a few of the Aristo PM if you want at a good price. NIB

Dan, will you be bringing them this weekend? Would love to see them up close.

But they’re fantastic, just from the photos, so that’s cool. Well, and the aisles will probably already be clogged due to other items you’re bringing, so… your call. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Yes. I will be bringing to the show. One may be displayed at the DnB.

Well how about that? 60’ boxcars on sale again right now!

I saw that too! Too bad I have way too many back logs of projects and money. I do wonder how much one could sell off a truckless shell for on the FB groups. :joy:
