GP38-2w / GP40-2w

The weather is starting to turn cold, so it’s time for winter projects. My main focus this winter is going to be a GP38-2w and 3 GP40-2w’s.

I’ve been designing the cab the last few weeks, and after the initial one looks like it will work, I’ve started to work on the rest.

I’ve also got started on modifying the GP38 long hood,

It’s great to see the green back in the picture :kissing:

I knew you’d like that Sean. This project will burn through a lot of it.

I’ve been making some progress on the cabs, and the GP38 long hood.

Nice modeling skills, I’m with you, keep up the good work. I realize many just run trains, but those with modeling skills bring another dimension to the hobby. I have no problem taking a perfectly good engine, car, etc. and making it something much more detailed to my liking.

John, do you have any modification threads of what details you add and how you add them to your piece of equipment? I love seeing what and how others accomplish what they talk about doing. Many of us may be able to learn from your sharing with us.

Thanks John. Yes, I really enjoy seeing new things when watching people’s videos, and of course in the many threads of this forum.

It’s also great that we can all keep historic equipment alive on our own layouts. ( David  )

Thank you Shane. That is looking for a good home as are the wagon top cars.

Ah the rare and elusive (non-existant) BL-2, my favorite diesel, good work!

You ain’t getting rid of it just keep it here …it’s the only place you ran that consist anyway. Besides I’m already storing your cement hoppers and express mail car when you want to get them out. When your not here I will use it for my track cleaning crew …less work for me and besides you don’t need the money!

Ok, I’m done Shane, sorry to jack up your ALWAYS awesome threads.

Oh, BTW …I still have that deal I offered awhile back on those CN MACS as they really need a new home so I can store the old mans crap.
Just saying :rooster:

I’m making good progress. Cabs just need rear doors and steps, and then can be painted.

The long hoods need some warmer weather so I can strip the old paint.

Merry Christmas everyone. :santa:

We’ve had some incredibly mild weather the last two days that allowed me to get some painting done.

That’s not a 48" long scale ruler just a regular straight metric and standard 48" correct?
I spy some BN green.

Craig, yes, it’s just a regular ruler. I use it to cut pieces off of my 4’ x 8’ sheets of styrene.

Thanks David.

I saw you mention that you’re considering keeping some of your dad’s trains, and joining the hobby. I hope that you do.

Hi Shane,

Yes, no doubt I will keep some of his collection, and tools, and start a project. I don’t know what I will start with yet, I guess I will see what inspires me as I am sorting through the collection. Probably also what my daughter is interested in helping with will be a deciding factor.

Thanks,
Dave

One more teaser. I’ve started working on the weathering on the GP38-2w hood. The GP40-2w’s will actually be in worse shape, so I’ll have lots of work to keep me busy as the weather turns cold again.

Nice! When I was in CT, the local short line ran GP-38-2’s with the original cab style. These "W"ide cab versions look so much more modern! Looking forward to seeing them on the rails.

Now the local train runs a vintage Porter with Alco power
