Large Scale Central

George Schreyer website seems to be closed

I am not sure if this has been covered already but I went to george’s fantastic online resource for a few pointers, only to find that it is closed and suspended.

Has he moved it to somewhere else?

Still works for me if I don’t “redirect” to the new page.

Strange that is still there since he moved to the new place in 2002. New place says “Account Suspended”.

I have both links in my saves, the old link opens and the new does say Suspended.

I hope George is ok and this is resolved before we loose the old too!

John

The Trainweb link had the following statement:

The Large Scale Trains Page has moved to a new home. As of 19 September 2002, this version of the Large Scale Trains Page is obsolete and will not be updated. However, it will remain here on TrainWeb in its current form for as long as the kind folks at TrainWeb wish it to remain.

Assuming that it’s true, something of George’s is better than nothing!

Yeah, I have got the old link but unfortunately I was after some info that he updated only a few of years ago.

Oh dear, I hope that he is okay…

His resource will be a great loss to the hobby if it is gone for good

George had some medical issues not too long ago, I have not talked to him in several months (we would often see each other at the local shows).

Yes the old site is all that is active, I’ll see if I can contact him.

Greg

That “Trainweb” link is now showing “page not found”. I hope he is good.

That would be really helpful Greg. Hope he is in good health.

Before it get’s lost in the shuffle with all the pertinent information it holds is lost, what would it take to host it somewhere, even here?

It would take George’s approval at minimum… I’d host it free with my websites, but the traffic would probably push me into a higher rate.

I wish I knew it was going away. I could at least archived it for personal use. May still do that with the Trainweb version. I have Mik’s Ashpit on my hard drive and I’m pretty sure Bob still has Tiny’s site stored away.

Yes I certainly hope George is okay !!

Also, his website is A fantastic resource. I always tend to go there if someone or myself is looking for answers. And tend to refer others to it to review for possible answers to their queries. Looking at the olde, I can see the differences(missings).

They say when ya post something to the internet it will always be there somewheres. Hmmm, maybe the things you want to disappear hang around forever, but great info sites like Georges’ sadly go black :frowning:

I just did a Who Is look up on the girr.org domain. It is a private registration, so none of George’s details are revealed, but it does say the registration is valid until September 2015. It could be as simple as his on-file credit card expired and he didn’t get the notice from his host so they shut him off. Anyway, I hope its something simple like that.

The way back machine has a snapshot from December 2014. http://web.archive.org/web/20141120155331/http://girr.org/girr/index.html

John, just for giggles and grins I searched for Mik’s old site and it is still available, up and running. Being as Mik’s site is a sub site within another site it may stay alive until the owner of that site needs the space/bandwidth. I do wonder though what the legality is on ‘relocating’ a site like that, considering the site is not an individual domain? It is truly sad when great sites like those vanish, so many of the senior (not necessarily age) folks use them as a resource to assist new folks. I know this site and others referred to them frequently.

I don’t know the legalities. The Wayback Machine gets away with re-publishing copyrighted content. They probably rely on the Digital Millenium act that gives them a chance to remove items with no legal recourse if anyone claims copyright infingement.

The copy of Mik’s site I have was made for personal reference in case the source disappears. I plan to do the same with George’s site, but it’s a lot more difficult than Mik’s as his only has a few levels. I would not publish either without the written permission of the owner (or estate in Mik’s case).

That was sort of what I was leading up to. I am interested to know at what point, as in Mik’s case, the copyright runs out. The second question would be one that can never really be answered, but I think we ‘know’ the answer. I Mik’s case I believe he would WANT US to find a way to keep that information alive and available. I would like to think the same of Tiny (although I never met him digitally or in person). I think anyone who invests the time and effort to put that kind of publication together does it for the sheer joy of sharing that with others.

I can’t answer on copyright law. Google may give you a clue. Does just claiming copyright actually give you one? I don’t know.

Prior to the last big software update here at LSC, Bob had a Fallen Flags section. That is where Tiny’s website lived on after his hosting expired. I think you are right about them wanting their sites to live on, but without knowing that for sure, it’s not a decision I would make.

In Miks’ case several of us knew his address when he passed. I’ll assume that Kim still lives there and can be contacted should anyone wish to get her permission to publish his site. If one wanted to split hairs, Mik probably didn’t have rights to most of the photos he posted on his site. Which again, under Digital Millennium isn’t too serious an issue so long as you comply with removal requests promptly.

Thanks for the link Dennis…I had forgotten about using ‘Way Back Machine’ …which is strange as I use it to check past iterations of my own art gallery site…must be old age…

I have now done that and downloaded the whole collection of George’s tips and it is functioning just like as if online…phew!

But I do hope that george is in good health…

How do you down load a site from Wayback?
